Waltham, Mass. (March 31) -- On Tuesday afternoon, the Assumption College women's lacrosse team dropped a 19-10 road final at No. 20 ranked Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference action.
The Falcons jumped out to an early 4-0 lead over the first 7:46 of play, capped by an Ellie Shuman goal with 22:14 remaining. Senior Camille Auger (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) got the Hounds on the board with 18:59 remaining on a free-position goal, one of five free-position scores for Assumption in the game. Auger added a second goal just 56 seconds later, giving her 100 goals for her four-year career with the Hounds as Assumption trailed just 4-2.
Bentley answered with a 4-0 run over a 10-minute span though, capped by back-to-back Jackie Brown goals, to push to an 8-2 advantage with 6:35 left in the half. The Hounds closed the period on a 3-0 run, including a pair of scores from sophomore Tori Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor). Senior Amy McNeil (Orange, Conn./Amity) found the back of the net with 1:16 left in the period, marking the 188th goal of her career to tie the Assumption career goal scoring record that was set by Assumption Hall of Famer Jenny Mongeau.
The two teams traded goals over the first 10 minutes of the second half before sophomore Quincy Wilkins (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug) notched her ninth goal of the season to pull the Hounds within just 10-8 with 19:40 remaining. A 4-0 Bentley scoring spurt though pushed the lead to 14-8 before Auger scored on another free-position attempt for the 14-9 margin at the 7:07 mark. The Falcons put together a quick 5-0 run though for the 19-9 lead before Russo finished off her hat trick with her 15th goal of the year to account for the 19-10 final.
Russo and Auger each had three goals for the Hounds, while sophomore goalie Jaclyn Chirco (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) had 10 saves in the game. For Bentley, Brown led the Falcons with five goals and one assist as seven Falcons tallied multiple goals in the game. In net, Lauren Ochs had nine saves to earn her fifth win of the season.
Assumption converted on five free-position chances for the game, including 4-of-5 in the second half while forcing 15 Bentley turnovers in the game. The Falcons held a 16-14 edge in ground balls and a 41-24 overall advantage in shots.
The Hounds fall to 7-3 overall and 3-3 in Northeast-10 play, while the Falcons improve to 5-4 overall and 4-3 in the league with the win.
Assumption is back in action on Thursday, April 2nd as the Hounds travel to Southern Connecticut for a 6 p.m. start at Jess Dow Field.
