Worcester, Mass. (April 11) -- On Saturday afternoon, the Assumption College women's lacrosse team dropped a 16-8 final to No. 7 ranked University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference play at the Multi-Sport Stadium.
New Haven jumped on the board just 12 seconds into the game as Courtney Ackland took a pass from Kathryn Campbell for the 1-0 lead. Ashley Travis added to the lead at the 24:36 mark, followed by a Nicole Belanger goal as she went in one-on-one and fired the ball into the lower right corner for the 3-0 advantage.
The Hounds quickly answered on a goal from senior Amy McNeil (Orange, Conn./Amity), her 27th of the season and the 191st of her career. Junior Molly Brown (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) cut the lead down to just one with 16:27 as she picked up the free-position goal for the 3-2 margin. New Haven ended the Hounds scoring run with 12:02 left in the half as Corinne Fisher scored off a restart following a foul to make it 4-2.
The teams traded goals over the next minutes, including a tally from sophomore Tori Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) at the 11:27 mark. After Brown made it a 5-4 score with 8:45 left with her second goal of the game, the Chargers closed the first half on a 5-0 run capped by an Ackland goal with just 4.7 seconds left to send the game into the break 10-4.
New Haven held an 18-7 advantage in shots on goal for the opening period, while Assumption forced nine Charger turnovers and converted 9-of-13 clear attempts.
The second half started slow before Assumption sophomore Quincy Wilkins (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug) made it a 10-5 game as she came from behind the net for the unassisted goal at the 20:57 mark. Ackland answered just 15 seconds later for the Chargers as she completed the hat trick and pushed the lead back to 11-5. The goal sparked a five-goal scoring run for New Haven that was capped off by a Campbell goal with 12:46 remaining.
Assumption ended the run with back-to-back unassisted goals from McNeil and Brown, cutting the margin to 15-7 at the 10:07 mark. Campbell capped off the goal scoring with nine minutes left for the Chargers, along with an unassisted goal for Assumption by senior Camille Auger (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) with 26.8 seconds left for the 16-8 final.
Brown led the Hounds with a hat trick, while McNeil added two for Assumption. New Haven held a 34-27 advantage in ground balls, while Assumption was 1-for-4 in free-position chances and forced 16 Charger turnovers overall.
Three Chargers posted hat tricks, while Campbell led all players with five assists.
Sophomore Jaclyn Chirco (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) made 15 saves in the loss, while Marissa McDermott had three stops to pick up the victory.
With the loss, Assumption drops to 8-5 overall and 4-5 in Northeast-10 play, while the Chargers are now 10-2 overall and 7-2 in the league.
Assumption is back in action on Tuesday, April 14th as the Hounds travel to Manchester, N.H. for a 4 p.m. start.
