Box Score

New Haven, Conn. (April 2) -- Led by four-goal showings from junior Molly Brown (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) and freshman Meghan Cushing (Gorham, ,Maine/Maine), the Assumption College women's lacrosse team held off Southern Connecticut for a 14-13 road win on Thursday evening.

Senior Amy McNeil (Orange, Conn./Amity) got the Hounds on the board 5:33 into the game as she became the all-time leading goal scorer in Assumption history with the 189th tally of her four-year career. Cushing eventually tied up the game at 2-2 and later at 3-3 with 8:57 left as the Hounds seemingly took control with a 5-0 scoring spurt to wrap up the first period. After Cushing knotted the game at 3-3, Brown picked up her first of two first-half goals, along with a free-position score from senior Camille Auger (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk)  and a goal from sophomore Tori Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor). Cushing assisted on Russo's goal as well, ending the half with three points to pace the visitors.

In the second, Assumption never trailed and led by as many as five at 9-4 following a Russo goal assisted on by Cushing just 5:03 into the period. The Owls came roaring back though, picking up two man-down goals in a 32-second span to key a 3-0 scoring spurt to close the deficit to just 9-7 with plenty of time remaining.

With 1:52 on the clock, freshman Alexis Pastore (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) posted a man-up goal for a seemingly comfortable advantage as the Hounds held the 14-11 advantage with under two minutes on the clock. Back came the Owls though as Lauren Anderson made it a two-goal game with 1:22 left, followed by the fourth goal of the game from Jennifer McCarthy with 39 seconds remaining to pull within one at 14-13. Following the final SCSU goal of the contest, Cushing picked up the ensuing draw control and the Hounds won for the eighth time this season while improving to 4-2 on the road in 2015.

In addition to the Brown and Cushing four-goal outings, Russo and Pastore each had two goals for the Hounds. On the Owls, three SCSU players ended the game with hat tricks as McCarthy tallied a team-best four goals.

Sophomore Jaclyn Chirco (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) made six saves for the win, while Nora Anderson had nine stops in the loss.

The Hounds held a 29-25 advantage in ground balls and converted 16-of-19 clear attempts while forcing 25 Owl turnovers. Southern Connecticut held a 19-10 edge in draw controls though, including a convincing 9-2 margin in the first half.

The Hounds improve to 8-3 overall and 4-3 in the Northeast-10, while the Owls are now 2-6 overall and 1-5 in the league.

Assumption is back in action on Wednesday, April 8 as the Hounds host Pace University for a 7 p.m. start at the Multi-Sport Stadium.
