-The Lead: The Assumption College volleyball team split their final day of competition at the Charger Invitational on Saturday, falling to Daemen 3-0 before rebounding for a 3-2 victory over Post. Sophomore Maria Chrisom (Dover, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas) was named to the Charger Invitational All-Tournament Team for her exceptional efforts over the weekend.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS - MATCH ONE vs. Daemen:
-Chrisom was the only Greyhound to reach double digits in the match, leading the squad with 12 digs.
-Freshman Kellie Smith (Richland, Mich. / Gull Lake) posted five kills to lead Assumption's offense.
-Senior Tara Reilly (Northport, N.Y. / Northport) notched the most blocks of all players on both squads, registering three total, two solo.
-Sophomore Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake) went three-for-eight at the net for a .375 kill percentage.
-Daemen's Ashley Drzymala led both team's offensive efforts with 15 kills on 36 total attempts.
HOW IT HAPPENED - MATCH ONE vs. Daemen:
-The Hounds dropped set one after a 5-1 lead sparked momentum for Daemen. The lead eventually extended to a 12-5 advantage and, despite an attempted comeback on a three-point run near the end, the Hounds fell 25-14.
-In set two, the Hounds were able to keep it close, tying the set at 7-7. An immediate five-point run by Daemen ensued however, and led to the eventual 25-15 loss.
-Assumption came close in set three, the score went back and forth for the first half of the match before Daemen took control again and claimed a 25-18 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS - MATCH TWO vs. Post:
-Reilly racked up a career-best 18 kills against Post on 43 total attempts for a .256 kill percentage. She also added four digs, one service ace and three blocks.
-Smith collected her second double-double of the season with 12 kills and 12 digs while also adding two blocks.
-Romanik posted a new season-high 36 assists while also going 8-for-14 at the net with just one error for an impressive .500 kill percentage.
-Chrisom led the defense with 25 digs, tying her season high against Queens on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED - MATCH TWO vs. Post:
-The Hounds jumped out to an early lead in set one, largely assisted by a three-point run behind a Reilly kill and service ace (4-2). Assumption increased the lead to 10-6 on a Romanik kill before Post tied it up 10-10. The teams traded points until Post went on another run to take a 15-13 lead and continued to hold on, 23-22. A Post attack error gave the Hounds possession (23-23) and three-straight Smith aces led to the eventual 26-24 Hound victory.
-Assumption earned a 25-23 win in set two in a very similar fashion. Jumping out to an early lead before Post tied it up 18-18 on an Assumption attack error. The Hounds clinched the victory on a Reilly and Romanik block for the final point and a 2-0 lead in the match.
-The Greyhounds dropped the next two 25-22 and 25-16 before rallying to take the fifth for the win.
-In set five, three-straight kills from Reilly gave the Hounds a 5-2 lead that the squad would not relinquish. With the score 13-6, Post begin a comeback, going on a 6-1 run to make it 14-12 Hounds. Coach Dube called a Greyhound timeout to refocus the team and Reilly came out of the huddle with the final kill for the 15-12 win.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
-Chrisom was the only Hound named to the 2015 Catholic Cup All-Tournament Team for her outstanding efforts throughout the weekend, notching a career-best 25 digs twice over the weekend.
UP NEXT:
-Assumption will travel to Dominican on Tuesday, Sept. 15 for a 7 p.m. contest before returning home on Tuesday, Sept. 22, to face Southern Connecticut State in their first Northeast-10 Conference match-up of the season at 6 p.m.
