-The Lead: The Assumption College volleyball team was topped by Adelphi in three sets on Saturday afternoon in the Hounds' second NE-10 match up of the season. Assumption returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 29, when it travels to Bentley for a 7 p.m. contest.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
-Sophomore Olivia Burke (Salem, N.H. / Salem) led the Greyhound offense with eight kills on 19 attempts for a .263 kill percentage. Burke also led all players with five blocks, two solo.
-Senior Tara Reilly (Northport, N.Y. / Northport) posted an impressive .429 kill percentage on the day, registering seven kills in 14 attempts with just one error.
-Freshman Kellie Smith (Richland, Mich. / Gull Lake) also tallied seven kills on the day and added four digs.
-Sophomore Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake) accumulated 28 assists on the day.
-Leading the Greyhound defense was senior Courtney Bagwell (Diamond Bar, Calif. / Diamond Bar) who notched 11 digs, third most in the match.
-Adelphi's Mandy Stanislovaitis led all players on the court with 14 kills in the match.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-The Hounds dropped set one 25-20 after the Panthers got out to a quick 6-1 lead. Sophomore Maria Chrisom (Dover, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas) notched her only kill of the match in the beginning of the set to tie it up 1-1 before Adelphi rattled off five straight points. The teams traded points and Adelphi got out to a 21-14 lead before the Hounds made it 19-23 on a 6-2 comeback run that included four kills from Reilly. A kill from Smith brought the score to 20-24 before Stanislovaitis clinched the victory for the Panthers, 25-20.
-Assumption brought it even closer in set two, falling by just three points, 25-22. The Hounds jumped out to a 5-1 lead on kills by Smith, Burke and Romanik (2) and held the lead midway through the set, 13-11. Adelphi tied it at 13-13, 14-14, 15-15, 16-16, 17-17, 18-18 and 19-19 before taking the lead 20-19 on a kill from McKenna Clawson. Smith tied it up 20-20 before Adelphi closed the match with five more points to Assumption's two.
-In set three, the Hounds opened with the first two points before Adelphi earned a swift 25-11 win to clinch the match.
UP NEXT:
-The Hounds return to action at Bentley on Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m. before returning back to Assumption on Saturday, Oct. 3, to host Southern New Hampshire for a 12 p.m. match up.
