-The Lead: The Assumption College volleyball team fell in three sets on Tuesday on the road at Bentley University. Freshman Kellie Smith (Richland, Mich. / Gull Lake) led the Hounds with 10 kills and 13 digs on the day.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
-Smith led the Greyhound offense with 10 kills while tallying two blocks. Smith also helped lead all players with 13 digs.
-Sophomore Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake) also posted 13 digs on the day to help lead the Hound defense while notching 24 assists. Romanik tallied three kills on just seven attempts to register an impressive .429 kill percentage.
-Sophomore Olivia Burke (Salem, N.H. / Salem) registered nine kills and a team-high three blocks. She posted a .471 kill percentage with her nine kills on 17 attempts.
-In addition to Smith's and Romanik's 13 kills, sophomore Maria Chrisom (Dover, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas) posted 10 digs to add to the Hound defensive effort.
-Senior Tara Reilly (Northport, N.Y. / Northport) posted an impressive kill percentage, .600, going 6-for-10 at the net while adding one block.
-Bentley's Shannon Kelly led both teams with 17 kills on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-Assumption fell in a close battle in set one after holding the lead for most of the opening set. The Hounds got out to a 6-4 lead and increased it to 16-13 before Bentley rallied to tie it up 17-17 and eventually lead 21-17. Reilly and Romanik rattled off two straight kills to make it 21-19 before Bentley closed the match on a 4-0 run for the 25-19 victory.
-The Hounds got out to another lead early in set two, 5-3, before the Falcons roared back with a six-point run to take a 9-5 lead. The squads traded points before the Hounds tied it at 19-19 and 21-21 on kills from Burke. Assumption took the lead but three straight Bentley points sealed the win for the Falcons, 25-23.
-The Falcons held a commanding advantage throughout set three, jumping out to a 4-1 lead and extending it to 16-5 after an 11-1 scoring run, ended by an ace from Greyhound sophomore Stephanie Hawley (Savannah, Ga. / St. Vincent's Academy). The ace sparked momentum for the Hounds as they traded points with the Falcons, but Bentley ultimately claimed a 25-15 win to clinch the sweep.
