THE BASICS:

-Score: American Int'l 3, Assumption 1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-13)

-Location: Worcester, Mass. (AC Volleyball Tournament, Laska Gymnasium)

-The Lead: The Assumption College volleyball team claimed the opening set of the season with a 25-23 victory over AIC before falling in three straight sets for the eventual 3-1 loss in match one of the Assumption College Volleyball Tournament on Friday evening.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-Senior captain Tara Reilly (Northport, N.Y. / Northport) led the Hounds with 10 kills on 18 total attacks, registering just one error for a .500 kill percentage. 

-Sophomore Stephanie Hawley (Savannah, Ga. / St. Vincent's Academy) followed just behind with nine kills and added 12 digs, second on the team.

-Sophomores Olivia Burke (Salem, N.H. / Salem) and Julia Goyette (Randolph, Mass. / Ursuline Academy) led the team in blocks with four and three, respectively. 

-AIC's Natlija Dordevic led all hitters with 21 kills. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-The Greyhounds came out strong in the first set, pulling ahead with a four-point run fueled by two Hawley service aces and a kill, 11-6. The Yellow Jackets attempted a comeback with a four-point run of their own, narrowing the deficit to 22-23 before Burke broke the momentum with a kill en route to the win.

-American Int'l claimed the second set 25-16 behind a six-kill performance from Dordevic.

-In the third set, the Hounds kept it even, tying the set 10-10 before a four-point run by the Yellow Jackets gave AIC a five-point lead (15-10). Assumption battled back with its own four-point streak to bring the score to 23-20 before two straight points by the Yellow Jackets closed the set.

-AIC dominated the fourth set, claiming the victory 25-13.

UP NEXT: 

-The Hounds continue competition on Saturday, Sept. 5, as they face Bloomfield and Nyack during the remainder of the Assumption College Volleyball Tournament. Assumption will take on Bloomfield at 10 a.m., followed by Nyack at 4 p.m.
