- The Lead: The Assumption College volleyball team fell this afternoon to Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 Conference play. The match was tightly contested throughout, as the Penmen won the third and fourth set by a combined four points.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Freshman Zara Velez (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush) recorded her second double-double of her career as she tallied 11 kills and 17 digs, while junior Olivia Burke (Salem, N.H. / Salem) led the offense with 12 kills.
- Junior Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake) also posted a double-double, dishing out 40 assists to go with 14 digs. Romanik also registered four kills, a service ace and five blocks.
- Junior Maria Chrisom (Dover, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas) led the team on the defensive side with a season high 33 digs.
- Southern New Hampshire's Marisa Coronis led all players on the day with 18 kills, while Joanne Coffey led the game with 48 assists.
- As a team, the Penmen recorded 65 kills, while the Hounds tallied 52 on the afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Assumption opened the first set on a roll, as the Hounds scored the first four points of the match, highlighted by two kills by junior Julia Goyette (Randolph, Mass. / Ursuline Academy). Assumption maintained its lead as another kill by Goyette brought the score to 14-8 in favor of the Hounds. With the score 19-17, the Penmen went on a eight point streak to take the first set 25-19.
- In set two, both teams battled as the Penmen held the lead for the majority of the set. With Southern New Hampshire leading 20-18, the Hounds stormed ahead, recording the next five points to take their first lead of the set, 23-20. Valez then put the match away with back-to-back kills to tie the match up at one set apiece.
- Set three played out much like the second set, as the score remained close with Southern New Hampshire leading for the majority of the contest. The Penmen's largest lead came when Jaclyn Maguire was set up for a kill by Coffey, pushing the lead to 20-15. The Hounds didn't quit, as they fought all the way back to tie it up at 24 points. The Set was tied again at 25, 26 and 27, before Assumption took its first lead, 28-27. Southern New Hampshire scored the final three points of the match to take the decisive third set, 30-28.
- Assumption used two kills by Valez to open the fourth set, 2-0, as the Hounds looked to force a fifth and final set. Southern New Hampshire scored the next six points behind a service run by Megan Salamun, before an attack error by Coronis broke the streak. The Penmen looked well on their way to victory as the lead ballooned to 17-10, but once again Assumption was up to the challenge, tallying the next eight out of ten points to pull within one, 19-18. With Southern New Hampshire up 24-23, the Hounds tied the set up at 24 and then again at 25, before the host scored the final two points to take the match 3-1.
