The Lead: Assumption came out firing in the first set for a dominant 25-13 win, won the second 25-21 and then came from behind to take the final set 25-23, to secure the 3-0 sweep of St. Michael's on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Hounds jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first set on a kill by Olivia Burke (Salem, N.H. / Salem) and then extended their advantage to 19-8 on a Purple Knights attack error. They kept rolling, and a kill from Kellie Smith (Richland, Mich. / Gull Lake) ended the set, 25-13.
- Assumption started strong in the second set as well, taking an 11-5 lead on another kill by Burke. The Hounds led 19-11, before a run by St. Michael's allowed the visitors to pull within three, 21-18. Assumption withstood the run and Burke finished off the set with a kill for a 25-21 victory.
-The Purple Knights came out firing in the third set, taking an 11-5 lead. They extended their lead to 19-12, before four straight by the Hounds pulled them within three, 19-16. They eventually tied the match up at 23-23 on a kill by Julia Goyette (Randolph, Mass. / Ursuline Academy), and then back-to-back St. Michael's attack errors provided a 25-23 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption hit an impressive .242 in the match with 42 kills, while the Purple Knights hit .104 with 37 kills. The Hounds also had seven total blocks, 55 digs and six aces.
- Smith led the team with 17 digs and 12 kills while hitting .281. Burke was equally impressive, hitting .391 with 11 kills and five total blocks. Goyette added nine kills and four aces while Zara Velez (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush) contributed five kills, six digs and four blocks.
- Defensively, Maria Chrisom (Dover, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas) contributed 17 digs to tie for the team lead. Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake) dished off 37 assists while recording six digs.
- Jordan Dean led St. Michael's with ten kills while Megan Priester added eight but hit just .031. Natalie Moore recorded a team-high 18 digs.
