- The Lead: The Assumption College volleyball team fell to American International 3-0 in Northeast-10 Conference play this evening at Henry A. Butova Gymnasium. The Hounds fell by scores of 17-25, 19-25 and 24-26.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Hounds dropped the first set 17-25 after falling into an early hole, as American International jumped out to a 15-9 lead. Assumption used two errors on the Yellow Jackets to move within 15-11, but AIC tallied the next six out of seven points to take a commanding 21-12 lead, one they would not relinquish.
- In set two, Assumption led 10-8 behind three kills by junior Julia Goyette (Randolph, Mass. / Ursuline Academy) and two kills by sophomore Kellie Smith (Richland, Mich. / Gull Lake) and junior Olivia Burke (Salem, N.H. / Salem). American International rallied to score the next six out of seven points to take a 14-11 lead, but Assumption kept battling back and got as close as 19-20, highlighted by a kill by freshman Zara Velez (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush). That's as close as the Hounds would come, as the Yellow Jackets ran off five straight points to win 25-19.
- In set three, Assumption once again led as they claimed an early 10-7 advantage. The Hounds maintained their lead as a kill by Goyette pushed the score to 17-15 in favor of the Hounds. The score then bounced back and forth before settling at 24-24, but American International clamped down and scored the final two points to take the set and the match.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Smith led Assumption on offense with 14 kills on a .387 hitting percentage. Goyette chipped in with eight kills and six digs, while Burke registered seven kills and two blocks.
- Junior Maria Chrisom (Dover, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas) and Velez led the Hounds on the defensive side, as they each recorded 11 digs. Velez also added two blocks, five kills and two assists.
- Junior Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake) was once again the offensive catalyst for Assumption as she dished out a team leading 33 assists to go with five digs, a kill and two blocks.
- For American International, Diva Rivas paced the Yellow Jackets with 13 kills, while Dolores Kopren handed out a match leading 42 assists and Jana Potic recorded 13 digs.

- The Greyhounds return to action Saturday, October 22nd as they travel to Georgian Court for a tri-match featuring Assumption, Felician and Georgian Court. The Hounds will play Felician at 1 p.m. before closing out their day against Georgian Court at 3 p.m.
