-The Lead: The Assumption College volleyball team fell to Stonehill College 3-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play this evening at Merkert Gymnasium. The Hounds fell by scores of 17-25, 22-25 and 25-13, 16-25.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Hounds dropped the first set 17-25 as Stonehill out hit Assumption, registering 14 kill to the Hounds 10. After junior Julia Goyette (Randolph, Mass. / Ursuline Academy) recorded a service ace to bring the score to 13-10 in favor of the Skyhawks, Stonehill buckled down and pushed their lead to 20-13. The Hounds tried to battle back, using two Stonehill errors to pull within six, but a Marykay Nasby kill gave the first set to the host.
- In set two, both teams battled hard with Assumption jumping out to a 5-2 lead. Stonehill rallied to take a 6-5 lead, but a kill by freshman Zara Velez (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush) and a service ace by Goyette put the Hounds back out in front, 7-6. After a back and forth between the teams, a kill by freshman Tess Haller (Cape Elizabeth, Maine / Cape Elizabeth) tied the set up at 20 apiece. Stonehill was able to pull away from there, taking the second set, 25-22.
- The Hounds fell into a deep hole in set three, falling behind 9-2 before taking a timeout to stop the Skyhawks momentum. The timeout proved to be effective as Assumption battled back to make the score 8-14, 12-16, 18-21 and then 22-22. Assumption kept its foot on the gas to take the lead and the set, 25-23.
- In set four, Assumption carried over the momentum from set three, taking a 5-2 lead highlighted by three kills by junior Olivia Burke (Salem, N.H. / Salem). The Hounds maintained their lead throughout the majority of the set, before the Skyhawks tied the set up at 12-12. From there on out it was all Stonehill as they rattled off six straight points, forcing an Assumption timeout. Out of the timeout, junior Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake) recorded a kill to make the score 14-20, but that's as close as they would come as Stonehill won the set (25-16) and the match (3-1).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Goyette and Smith led the Assumption attack, as Goyette tallied a game high 12 kills, while Smith recorded 11 to go with a dig and three blocks.
- Junior Maria Chrisom (Dover, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas) led the team with 20 digs, while Smith chipped in with 18.
- Romanik was the engine that made the offense go, registering 32 assists, 11 digs, two service aces and four kills.
- For Stonehill, Katherine DeLanty and Marykay Nasby each tallied 11 kills, while Taylor Stevens dished out 48 assists and Claire Manuszak produced a team leading 18 digs.
