- The Lead: The Assumption College volleyball team fell this evening to Le Moyne College, 3-0, in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Hounds dropped the three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-19 and 27-25. Tuesday's match marks the first of three at home, as the Hounds return to action on Thursday, Oct. 13, when they host Merrimack at 7 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Assumption took an early 2-1 lead as Smith started the match out with back-to-back kills. Le Moyne then rattled off six of the next seven points to take the lead. The Hounds kept it close and trailed just 18-17 before Le Moyne pulled away to win 25-18.
- In set two, Le Moyne tallied the first two points of the set, before Assumption put together a four-point streak highlighted by a Velez kill to take a 4-2 lead. With the score tied 16-16, Smith and junior
Olivia Burke (Salem, N.H. / Salem) registered back-to-back kills to force a Le Moyne timeout. The timeout worked, as the Dolphins scored the next nine of 11 points to win set two.
- Set three saw Assumption start off with a bang, as junior Julia Goyette (Randolph, Mass. / Ursuline Academy) produced three kills to push the Hounds lead to 7-3. After Le Moyne made a run of its own to tie the match at eight, the two teams exchanged points from there on out. The match was tied on six separate occasions before it reached 16-16, Velez then recorded a kill and Assumption used an attack error by Le Moyne to take a 18-16 lead. The Dolphins rallied to tie the match again at 23-23, but the Hounds kept fighting, getting to set point at 24-23 and again at 25-24. Le Moyne rattled off the next three points to win the set and the match.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Sophomore Kellie Smith (Richland, Mich. / Gull Lake) led the Hounds with nine kills on the evening, adding eight digs, three service aces and an assist to her stat line. Freshman Zara Velez (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush) chipped in with six kills and 12 digs.
- Freshman Brenna Chrisom (Dover, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas) posted her first double-digit assist effort of her career today, dishing out 24 assists to lead the Greyhounds. The freshman also recorded her first double-double of her career, adding 12 digs.
- Junior Maria Chrisom (Dover, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas) was once again the defensive stalwart for Assumption, registering 19 digs to lead all players in the match.
- Le Moyne's Natalie Casson led all players on the day with 17 kills, while Casson also led the Dolphins with 13 digs. Junior Kendall Corcoran, the reigning NE-10 Setter of the Week, dished out a match high 42 assists.
- As a team, the Dolphins recorded 48 kills, while the Hounds tallied 29 on the evening.
