- The Lead: The Assumption College volleyball team fell to the College of Saint Rose 3-0 in Northeast-10 Conference play this evening at Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The Hounds fell by scores of 19-25, 20-25 and 22-25.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Assumption dropped the first set 19-25 after holding an early 8-3 lead. Junior Olivia Burke (Salem, N.H. / Salem) tallied a kill to make the score 9-4, before the Golden Knights rattled off nine straight points to take a 13-9 lead. The Hounds fought back to take a 14-13 lead on a Julia Goyette (Randolph, Mass. / Ursuline Academy) kill, but that's as close as they would come as Saint Rose pulled away to take the first set.
- In set two, Saint Rose scored the first five points of the set to put the Hounds in an early hole. Assumption was able to take the lead, using an 8-2 run to take an 8-7 lead on a kill by sophomore Kellie Smith (Richland, Mich. / Gull Lake), but Saint Rose regained the lead with four straight points and didn't look back, taking set two 25-20.
- Saint Rose took a commanding lead in set three as the Golden Knights jumped out in front 11-4 looking for the sweep. The Hounds came back to move within one point (14-15), highlighted by two kills by Burke, but every time Assumption rallied, Saint Rose answered. The Golden Knights pushed ahead leading by four late (16-20), but once again the Hounds look to force a fourth set, tying the set at 22 points apiece. A kill by Saint Rose, an error by Assumption and a service ace ended the set 25-22 and gave the Golden Knights their fifth NE-10 win of the season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Burke was the lone Hound to post double digit kills in the match, registering 11 on a .440 hitting percentage to go with two blocks.
- Defensively, Smith led the way for Assumption posting 14 digs, while tallying five kills and an assist.
- Junior Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake) filled the stat sheet with a double-double, recording a team leading 27 assists to go with 10 digs and two kills.
- For Saint Rose, Maryellen Devic led all players with 17 kills to go with 15 digs. Sam Kubik led the team with 21 assists, while Samantha Atchinson recorded 17 digs.
