The Lead: Assumption led by six points at the half and held a slim advantage in the final five minutes, before Holy Family went on a late run to escape with 76-69 win over the Hounds on Saturday in the East Coast Challenge hosted by Saint Rose.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Assumption jumped out to an early 9-5 advantage, before an 11-2 run by the Tigers gave them a 16-11 lead midway through the half. The Hounds never let their deficit grow greater than five, and a three from Justin Tuckson (Stafford, Va. / Christ Chapel Academy) gave them a 26-25 lead with 2:48 left in the period. That was part of a 9-2 run to grab a 33-27 lead going into the break.
- Holy Family opened the second half on a 9-1 run to pull in front 36-34 on a three-point play by Randy Bell with 16:21 left. Later in the period, five straight points by Austin Kearney (Monroeville, N.J. / Gloucester County Christian) gave Assumption back the lead, 45-44, at 11:46.
- The lead changed hands multiple times over the next eight minutes, before consecutive baskets by Damien Rance (Melbourne, Australia / Pope John XXIII) and Declan Soukup (Melbourne, Australia / Hallam Senior College) put the Hounds in front 60-59 with 3:32 left. Holy Family took back the lead and went on a 10-2 run over the final two minutes to push its lead as high as nine before finishing with the 76-69 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Assumption shot 43.1 percent for the contest and 10 of 24 from downtown, but made just 9 of 16 free throws. Holy Family shot 43.3 percent overall and 26.1 percent from beyond the arc, though the team scored 23 points off turnovers.
- The Hounds were outrebounded 39-37 and had 16 assists while turning the ball over 20 times.
- Rance led four players in double figures with 18 points, seven rebounds and two blocks, while Soukup had 16 points, five rebounds and three assists.
- Kearney scored a career-high ten points with four rebounds while Marcus Murray (Washington, D.C. / John F. Kennedy) added 11 points, ten rebounds and four assists.
- Bell and Dylan Hudson-Emery scored 62 of Holy Family's 76 points as Bell registered 35 points and Hudson-Emery had 27 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
