- The Lead: In the 2016 season opener on Tuesday afternoon, the Assumption College women's lacrosse team dropped a 14-12 home final to visiting American International College at the Multi-Sport Stadium. The Hounds held an 8-6 advantage at the half before the Yellow Jackets rallied for the two-goal victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Hounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 32 seconds in as junior Julianna Molloy (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) notched the first goal of the season. Assumption stretched that lead out to 5-2 midway thru the half as Molloy registered three of the team's first five goals.
- AIC pulled to within 6-5 with 8:26 remaining in the first after a man-up goal from Riley Brennan before the Hounds eventually took the 8-6 lead into the halftime break. Sophomore Caitlin Graves (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) scored twice late in the period as she eventually ended the game with three scores.
- The Yellow Jackets came out firing to start the second half with four straight goals, seizing the 10-8 advantage after just 5:31. Graves and sophomore Erin Gildea (Boca Raton, Fla./Pope John Paul II) tied the game at 10-10 for the Hounds before another four-goal AIC run gave the visitors the 14-10 advantage with 12:02 left.
- Gildea and Molloy added goals late as the Hounds attempted to rally before dropping the 14-12 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Molloy led the Hounds with a four-goal afternoon, while Graves added three goals and sophomore Meghan Cushing (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) posted two goals and one assist. Gildea also had a multi-goal day with two, while freshman Kailyn Hart (Cohoes, N.Y./Shaker) added her first career point with an assist late in the first half.
- Brennan led AIC with a seven-goal outing to give her 11 on the season thru two games. Whitney McKay added two goals and two assists as five different players scored for the Yellow Jackets.
- Alexis Torosian posted 13 saves for the Yellow Jackets in the victory, while junior goalie Jaclyn Chirco (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) had 13 stops in defeat.
- Assumption forced 22 Yellow Jacket turnovers and was successful on 18-of-22 clear attempts, while the Yellow Jackets held a 17-11 advantage on draw controls and converted 3-of-8 free position opportunities.
- The Hounds held a 21-14 advantage in ground balls, while the two teams combined for 79 fouls in the game.
