- The Lead: Despite three players with multiple goals on Saturday afternoon, the Assumption College women's lacrosse team dropped an eventual hard-fought 15-9 road final to No. 4/6 ranked University of New Haven in Northeast-10 play at Kayo Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Senior Molly Brown (Manchester, N.H./Manchester West) put the Hounds up 1-0 just 1:57 into the game and added a man-down goal with 22:15 left in the first as the visitors maintained a 2-1 lead. After the Chargers went up 5-3 with eight minutes left, sophomore Caitlin Graves (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) made it a 5-4 margin on a goal with 6:58 on the clock. New Haven took an eventual 6-4 edge into the second period though as Caitlin O'Brien found the back of the net with just 38 seconds left.
- In the second half, the Hounds came out firing and tied the game with two quick goals from junior Julianna Molloy (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) to knot the game at 6-6. Her first goal came just 17 seconds into the second period, along with a second with 25:37 on the clock. New Haven answered with a convincing 9-1 run to jump to a 15-7 lead before Graves and Brown scored in the final minutes for the 15-9 final. Graves scored with 2:18 on the clock after a pass from junior Tori Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor), while Brown converted a free position opportunity with only 21 seconds remaining.
- Junior goalie Jaclyn Chirco (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) had 12 saves in the loss, while New Haven goalies Alyssa Gianotti and Marissa McDermott combined for four stops to pick up the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Brown led the Hounds with four goals on the day to go along with four ground balls, while Graves posted three goals and Molloy had two goals. Sophomore Meghan Cushing (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) added four ground balls and a team-best six draw controls to go along with one assist, two ground balls, five draw controls and two caused turnovers from Russo.
- For New Haven, Maya Szymanski had four goals and three assists, while O'Brien added four goals and two assists.
- Draw controls were at 14-12 in favor of New Haven, while Assumption converted 13-of-15 clear opportunities and forced nine New Haven turnovers. In addition, ground balls were even at 19 per team.
