- The Lead: Led by a three-goal, one-assist effort by freshman Kailyn Hart (Cohoes, N.Y./Shaker), the Assumption College women's lacrosse team defeated Saint Michael's College by a 9-6 final on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Assumption jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the first 15:52 of the game, capped by a Hart goal off an assist from sophomore Caitlin Graves (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) with 14:08 on the clock. Saint Michael's answered with a four-goal scoring run over just 8:05 as four different players found the back of the net.
- The Hounds answered with three goals over the last 3:54 of the first period as the visitors took an eventual 6-4 lead into the break. Freshman Krista Iwanicki (Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial) started the run, followed by a man-up goal from Graves and a goal from Hart with one second left on the clock.
- Two goals from senior Molly Brown (Manchester, N.H./Manchester West) highlighted the second half, while Hart capped off her hat trick. Kealy Moyna picked up two goals for Saint Michael's in the second period as she ended the game with a three-goal day to go along with three draw controls.
- Junior goalie Jaclyn Chirco (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) had five saves in the victory, while Purple Knight goalie Grace Gunning had four stops in the loss.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Hart posted four points on three goals and one assist to go along with two ground balls and a team-best three caused turnovers. Brown and Graves each added two goals and one assist, while junior Tori Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) had a team-high six ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers.
- Moyna was the top scorer for Saint Michael's as she ended the game with three goals to go along with three draw controls.
- Assumption held a slim 21-17 edge in ground balls while forcing 18 Purple Knight turnovers. The Hounds were also successful on 12-of-18 clear attempts, while the teams were even in draw controls with eight each.
