-The Lead: The Assumption College volleyball team fell in two matches today, dropping three sets to Slippery Rock in the first match, before falling 3-0 to Daemen in the second contest. Assumption will resume competition at the Amherst Wildcat Classic on Sunday.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS - MATCH ONE vs. Slippery Rock:

- Sophomore Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake) accumulated 21 assists to go with four kills to pace the Hounds' offense. Romanik also contributed on the defensive side, recording six digs.

-Freshman Tess Haller (Cape Elizabeth, Maine / Cape Elizabeth) registered a team high nine kills, while junior Julia Goyette (Randolph, Mass. / Ursuline Academy) and sophomore Kellie Smith (Richland, Mich. / Gull Lake) each posted six kills.

-Sophomore Maria Chrisom (Dover, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas) was the defensive catalyst for the Hounds, recording a team high 15 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED - MATCH ONE vs. Slippery Rock:

-Slippery Rock jumped out to a one-set lead with a 25-21 victory in set one. Assumption claimed the early advantage (4-3) when Chrisom set up Romanik for her first kill of the match. The Rock regained the lead with six straight points, highlighted by Brooke Bostwick's two kills. The Hounds came within two points (17-15), but Slippery Rock buckled down and closed the first set out on a service error.

-In set two, the Rock took control and downed the Hounds 25-18. Down early, Smith tied the match at 14 apiece when Romanik set her up for the kill. With the score tied, Slippery Rock rattled off five straight points for an insurmountable lead.

-Assumption dropped the third set 25-21 after leading 11-5 early against the Rock. The Hounds were able to hold off a rally from Slippery Rock when freshman Sydney Hofmann (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush) registered a service ace to keep the lead at 13-11. The Rock then went on an 8-1 run, sealing up the three set match.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS - MATCH TWO vs. Daemen:

-It was junior Olivia Burke (Salem, N.H. / Salem) who led the Assumption offense in the second match of the day, posting eight kills. Haller finished right behind Burke with six kills in the match.

-Smith and Chrisom notched seven and six digs, respectively to lead Assumption's defense.

-Romanik added 15 assists, two service aces and two digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED - MATCH TWO vs. Daemen:

-The Hounds fell in three sets, with the first being the closest as the Hounds pulled within three (25-22). The teams traded points throughout the contest but the Hounds pulled ahead briefly on a kill by Burke. With the score 11-9 in Assumptions favor, the Wildcats picked up five straight point behind a service run by Amber Drzymala. The teams continued to trade points and with the Daemen leading 22-23, the Wildcats rattled off two more points to take set one.

-In set two, Assumption got out to a 6-3 advantage and held the lead until Daeman tied the set up at eight points. From there on it was all Wildcats, as the host pulled away to win 25-13

-Set three was a trading of runs between the squads. The Hounds started the match down 3-0, before a three-point streak tied it up. Soon after, the Hounds continued their run and went up 6-4 on two errors by Daemen. The Wildcats seized the momentum and went on a five point streak to take the lead 9-6 and were able to hold on for the remainder of the match, eventually winning 25-19.

UP NEXT: 

-Assumption returns to action tomorrow with two more matches to close out the Amherst Wildcat Classic. The Hounds will face Lake Erie at 10 a.m., followed by Roberts Wesleyan at noon.
