-The Lead: The Assumption College volleyball team dropped two matches today, falling in three close sets to Lake Erie in the opening match, before faltering 3-0 to Roberts Wesleyan in the second contest.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS - MATCH ONE vs. Lake Erie:
- Sophomore Kellie Smith (Richland, Mich. / Gull Lake) posted her first double-double of the season, recording 11 kills and 13 digs. Her 11 kills were a team high, while her 13 digs trailed just junior Maria Chrisom's (Dover, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas) 15 digs.
- Junior Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake) was once again the engine that made the offense flow, dishing out a team high 26 assists. Romanik also chipped in with six kills, four digs and a service ace.
- Junior Olivia Burke (Salem, N.H. / Salem) and freshman Tess Haller (Cape Elizabeth, Maine / Cape Elizabeth) each contributed six kills to the Hounds' offense.
HOW IT HAPPENED - MATCH ONE vs. Lake Erie:
- Assumption dropped the opening set 21-25 after falling behind 5-2 in the early going. Lake Erie pushed its lead to 15-11, before the Hounds rallied off five straight points behind a service run by freshman Zara Velez (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush). With Assumption maintaining its lead at 20-18, the Storm scored four straight points to take the retake the lead. Lake Erie would account for the remainder of the points in the set besides a kill by Burke.
- Assumption brought it even closer in set two, falling by just two points (26-24). With both teams exchanging points, Romanik dished out two assists and Lake Erie's Crystal Kedroske was charged with an attack error as the Hounds tied the match up at 19 points. The teams would once again exchange points as the score remained deadlocked at 23, but the Storm would pull away and take the second set.
- As was the case throughout the match, the third set was once again close as Assumption fell 25-23. Lake Erie seized momentum early, jumping out to a 4-0 lead but the Hounds battled back, tying the set up at six. Assumption would grow its lead to 12-7 and maintain it all the way the end where they led 23-20. The Storm closed out the set and the match behind a five point streak where Lee Lee Barrett accounted for three of the kills.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS - MATCH TWO vs. Roberts Wesleyan:
- Smith was two kills and a dig away from her second consecutive double-double, tallying eight kills and nine digs in match two.
-Romanik added 23 assists, four digs and a kill, while Chrisom led the defense with 14 digs.
- Burke, Velez and junior Julia Goyette (Randolph, Mass. / Ursuline Academy) each registered five kills in the second match.
HOW IT HAPPENED - MATCH TWO vs. Roberts Wesleyan:
-The Hounds fell in three sets, with the first being the closest as the Hounds pulled within three (25-20). Assumption fell behind early and as the lead grew to 20-12 in favor of the Redhawks, the Hounds fought back to within three (20-17) where Romanik recorded three assists during the stretch. That's as close as the first set would get as Roberts Wesleyan took the one set advantage.
- Assumption never led in the second set as Roberts Wesleyan took control of the match 2-0, earning a 25-16 win in set number two.
- Roberts Wesleyan closed out the match in set three 25-14, mainly by using an early 8-1 run that gave the Redhawks the momentum. Assumption ran off four straight points with Smith registering back-to-back kills and Romanik recording three assists to bring the score to 7-12, but Roberts Wesleyan put its foot on the gas and pulled away to win the match 3-0.
