- The Lead: The Assumption volleyball team fell in straight sets to St. Anselm 3-0 in its season-opener on the road. The Hounds received a team-high nine kills from Kellie Smith (Richland, Mich. / Gull Lake) to lead the offense.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Assumption fell behind 20-14 in the first set, in dropping the opening set 25-20.
- The Hounds trailed by six midway through the second set but back to pull within one, 17-16 on a Smith kill. However, the Hawks scored seven of the next eight points to earn the win.
- Another early deficit was too much to overcome in the final set, though the Hounds were down just 23-20 before St. Anselm scored the final two points of the match.
Inside the Numbers
- Smith led the offense with nine kills on 25 attempts, hitting .240 while adding four digs.
- Maria Chrisom (Dover, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas) led the defense with 16 digs and one ace while Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake) contributed 18 assists, four kills and three aces.
- Katy Teets paced the Hawk offense with 12 kills while Amanda Williams was also in double figured with ten kills and four total blocks.
- Riley Grussing dished off a match-high 43 assists with eight digs while CC Chrisom led the defense with 18 digs.
