The Lead: Assumption fell behind 2-0, but came back to take the third set and nearly captured the fourth set before ultimately falling 3-1 at Southern Connecticut State on Tuesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hounds started slow, before scoring four straight points midway through the first set to draw even 15-15. The teams were tied up again at 17-17, but SCSU took eight of the final nine points to secure the 25-18 victory.
- Assumption fell behind 14-5 and then 20-11 in the second set before making a run. The team scored five straight and continued to trade points before eventually falling by a 25-22 margin.
- It was a back-and-forth third set, with neither team able to take a lead of more than three until the Hounds were down 16-13. They responded by winning the next five points for an 18-16 advantage. Assumption continued to play well and pulled in front 23-21 on consecutive aces by Sydney Hofmann (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush) before earning the 25-23 victory.
- The Hounds jumped out to an 8-4 advantage in the fourth set and then took a 15-11 lead on a kill by Zara Velez (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush). Southern Connecticut came back to take a 19-17 advantage, though Assumption tied it up at 20, 21 and 22. A bad set by the Owls event it up 23 apiece, but back-to-back kills by Faith Ford ended the set 25-23 in favor of the home team.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Owls out-hit Assumption .233-.133 while registering 23 more kills (66-43). The Hounds did have more blocks (7-5) and seven aces to just four by the home team.
- Junior Julia Goyette (Randolph, Mass. / Ursuline Academy) led the offense with ten kills and hit .286, while Velez added eight kills, 15 digs and three blocks.
- Olivia Burke (Salem, N.H. / Salem) was impressive with nine kills and five blocks, while Kellie Smith (Richland, Mich. / Gull Lake) chipped in 14 digs and eight kills.
- Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake) posted a double-double of 34 assists, 13 digs and three blocks, while Maria Chrisom (Dover, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas) paced the defense with 27 digs.
- Leanna Jadus led the Owls with 20 kills and 13 digs, while Alexandra Nimz dished off a team-high 56 assists and had seven digs. Alexandria Jurgens chipped in ten kills and 16 digs.
