The Lead: Assumption was down 2-1 but stormed back to capture the final two sets, including the fifth by just a 15-13 margin, to take down two-time defending Northeast-10 Champion Adelphi at home on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hounds played even with the Panthers through much of the first set, never trailing by more than four points. Knotted at 20 apiece, Assumption scored four of the next six points, including a kill by Olivia Burke (Salem, N.H. / Salem) to give them set point, 24-22. An attack error by Adelphi on the ensuing point provided the three-point victory.
- In the second set the Panthers came out firing, as they jumped out to an 8-2 advantage. Assumption managed to pull back within five, 14-9, but an 8-2 run by the visitors pushed their lead to 22-11. They finished with the 25-13 victory in the set.
- Adelphi took a 10-5 lead in the third and eventually extended it to 20-13. The Panthers kept hitting well to finish with the 25-15 win.
- The fourth set was back and forth as the Hounds refused to go away. Knotted 14-14 midway through the set, Adelphi went on a run to pull in front 18-15. However, Assumption responded with a 6-1 run to grab back the lead, 21-19 on a Julia Goyette (Randolph, Mass. / Ursuline Academy) kill. The teams kept trading points over the remained of the set, and another kill from Goyette eventually propelled them to the 25-23 win, forcing a fifth set.
- The Hounds and Panthers were tied 5-5 in the fifth, but Adelphi scored five straight points to pull in front 10-5. Zara Velez (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush) ended the run and Assumption eventually tied it 11-11 on a Tess Haller (Cape Elizabeth, Maine / Cape Elizabeth) kill. The Hounds did trail 13-12 before Kellie Smith (Richland, Mich. / Gull Lake) came through win a kill to tie it, and Goyette finished off Adelphi with consecutive kills for the 15-13 victory.
