- The Lead: The Assumption College volleyball team fell into an early hole as Saint Anselm won the first two sets, before Assumption fought back to win the third, 25-22 on Tuesday night. The Hawks closed out the contest in the fourth set, recording a 25-17 win to pick up their tenth victory on the season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Junior Julia Goyette (Randolph, Mass. / Ursuline Academy) and freshman Zara Velez (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush) led the Greyhound offense with six kills each, while combining for 12 digs and two blocks.
- Junior Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake) was once again the offensive catalyst for the Hounds, as she recorded a team high 22 assists and 12 digs. The junior also posted five kills and hit .556%, while totaling two blocks.
- Sophomore Kellie Smith (Richland, Mich. / Gull Lake) registered five kills on the offensive side while contributing ten digs.
- Junior Maria Chrisom (Dover, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas) led the team with 15 digs and added two assists and a kill.
- Saint Anselm's Katy Teets led all players with 11 kills, while Jewel Hays handed out a match high 27 assists.
- The Hawks recorded 45 kills on the match, while Assumption registered 33.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Hounds fell into an early hole in the first set, falling behind 5-1 before rallying to make the score 8-6, highlighted by a Goyette kill. Saint Anselm pulled away from there, upping its lead to 16-8 and then to 24-14 before Kary Teets kill gave the Hounds the first set.
- In set two, it was all Saint Anselm as the host scored 12 of the final 13 points to win 25-9.
- Much like the first set, Assumption fell into an early hole as the Hawks jumped out to a 13-4 lead. The Hounds rallied, using a service run by freshman Sydney Hofmann (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush) to cut the Saint Anselm lead down to 13-9. The Hawks responded and looked to pull away as they built their lead to 18-13, but the Hounds wouldn't quit as Romanik tallied three kills including the final kill to give Assumption set three, 25-22.
- Using the momentum from the third set victory, Assumption took the early lead 7-4 behind five Saint Anselm errors. The Hawks straightened their game out and went on a five points streak to take a 9-7 lead. A kill by Velez brought the score to 9-8 in favor of the Hawks, but that was as close as the score would get for the remainder of the set as Saint Anselm scored the next eight out of ten points to take the commanding lead, eventually claiming the fourth set, 25-17, and the match 3-1.
