- The Lead: The Assumption college volleyball team and Saint Anselm were tied 1-1 after the first two sets, but the Hounds dropped the last two 25-28 and 26-24 to drop the contest 3-1 on their senior day on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Assumption took a 3-0 lead off two kills by senior
Julia Goyette (Randolph, Mass./Ursuline Academy) and one kill from freshman
Mary Campbell (Plainville, Mass. / Bishop Feehan). The Hawks came back to tie the game 3-3 while the points tallied back and fourth until the 12th point when Saint Anselm extended their lead to 20-14 out scoring the Hounds 8-2. With the score 22-17, a kill by
Jewel Hayes followed by two kills by
Holly Manchester ended the set in favor of the Hawks.
- The Hounds jumped out to an 18-12 lead in the second set until Saint Anselm scored six consecutive points to tie the set 18-18. Kills from senior
Olivia Burke (Salem, N.H./Salem) junior
Kellie Smith (Richland, Mich. / Gull Lake) and freshman
Ariana Orcera (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico / Colegio Marista) gave Assumption the 23-20 lead and Goyette ended the set for the Hounds on a kill.
- Saint Anselm built up a commanding 20-7 lead in the third set until the Hounds went on to out score them 11-4 in the next 15 points to bring the score to 24-18. Madison Sollows registered a kill assisted by Jewel Hays to end the set and claim the 2-1 lead.
- For the second time in the match, Assumption took a 11-7 lead, but later in the set Saint Anselm fought back to tie it 12-12. The points went back and fourth through the remainder of the set to head to a 24-24 tie. Two kills by Hawk Catherine McCarthy would solidify the 26-24 comeback win and end the game 3-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption recorded a hitting percentage of .169, tallied 51 kills, 84 digs and 10 blocks while Saint Anselm hit .234 to go with 62 kills, 99 digs and eight blocks.
- Freshman Waylin Walls Parker (Beecher, Ill. / Beecher), and seniors Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake) and Goyette each tallied two blocks while Burke added three. Smith led the offense with 17 kills and a .265 hitting percentage and Brenna Chrisom (Dover, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas) tallied 29 digs.
- Katy Teets led the team with 16 kills, 10 digs and three blocks. Hays recorded 48 assists while Danielle Isabell tallied 31 digs.
