The Lead: No. 19 Bentley led by 14 points early in the fourth quarter, before an Assumption run cut the deficit all the way to five, however, the comeback came up short and the Falcons made their free throws late to secure a 73-59 win on the road Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Assumption jumped out to a 7-5 lead on a triple from Abby McKanna (Narragansett, R.I. / Narragansett) at 6:52. Bentley responded with a 10-5 run over the next four minutes to pull in front 15-12., Two Jo Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) free throws at 1:05 made it a one-point game and Jaclyn Storey (Cumberland, Maine / Greely) gave her team a one-point lead, 16-15, to end the period.
- The Falcons pulled in front by one two minutes into the second, before back-to-back baskets by Jordan Hawkins (Glen Burnie, Md. / Glen Burnie) gave the Hounds a 22-19 advantage at 5:38. Bentley countered with a 10-4 run to take a 29-26 lead with 2:47 remaining in the period and extended it to 35-28 with 56 seconds remaining. Allison Stoddard (East Lyme, Conn. / East Lyme) ended the half with a triple to leave Assumption down 35-31 at the break.
- Bentley opened the third quarter with ten straight points forcing a Hound timeout at 5:48. Stoddard and Impellizeri ended the run, but the Falcons outscored Assumption by two over the final five minutes to lead 54-42 going into the fourth.
- Trailing 58-44, Kelly Carey (Long Beach, N.Y. / Holy Trinity) hit a trey to jumpstart a 10-1 run to put the Hounds down just 59-54 at 6:23. Five straight from the Falcons extended their lead back to ten with 3:36 left and they made their free throws in the final minute to earn the 14-point win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption shot 43.4 percent from the floor and 6 of 14 from downtown, while Bentley shot 41.8 percent overall. The Falcons did make 9 of 20 shots from beyond the arc and were 18-for-22 from the free throw line.
- Bentley held a 36-30 edge on the boards, while forcing 17 Hound turnovers. The Falcons also held an 18-4 advantage in bench scoring.
- Impellizeri led the offense with 23 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and two assists while Stoddard posted 12 points, eight assists and two rebounds. Carey chipped in eight points and three rebounds.
- Jen Gemma led Bentley with 12 points, 16 rebounds, four assists and two steals. Macchi Smith added 16 points while Lauren Green had 14 points.
