The Lead: Sophomore Sarah Reilly (Fairfield, Conn. / Fairfield-Warde) scored the game-tying goal with nine minutes left in regulation and then in overtime with the score even 10-10, the sophomore came through with the game-winner to lift Assumption to an 11-10 victory over Franklin Pierce on Tuesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Quincy Wilkins (Wilbraham, Mass. / Minnechaug) gave Assumption a 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the game, but Franklin Pierce tied it up at 27:04. Freshman Amanda Burns (Billerica, Mass. / Billerica Memorial) put the Hounds back in front as part of a 4-0 spurt including goals from Jenny Bush (Kennebunk, Maine / Kennebunk), Alexis Pastore (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / Charles W. Baker) and Burns again for a 5-1 advantage eight minutes into the contest.
- The Ravens ended the run, but two more Assumption goals extended the lead to 7-2 with 12:39 remaining in the half. Franklin Pierce responded with a run of its own, scoring four times in four minutes and then added a fifth straight goal with 2:56 remaining to tie the score 7-7. Callie Dwyer (Merrimack, N.H. / Merrimack) put the Hounds back on top with 2:35 left and they went into the half leading 8-7.
- Franklin Pierce scored twice in the opening ten minutes of the second half to take its first lead of the game, 9-8. Reilly tied the game up at 15:51, but Franklin Pierce responded two minutes later for a 10-9 advantage. The sophomore then pulled the Hounds even with 9:12 remaining. The defense allowed just one shot in the final five minutes while the offense managed four, as neither team was able to score.
- The Ravens won the draw and tried to put a shot on net but it went wide. Assumption took possession and cleared the ball to the offensive zone before getting it to Reilly, who scored 1:25 into OT to lift the Hounds to victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption was outshot in the contest 31-25 and the Ravens picked up more ground balls (15-12) but the Hounds won 14 of 23 draw controls.
- Reilly scored the final three goals for Assumption, finishing the game with four goals and two assists on just five shots. Wilkins added one goal and two assists while Burns had her first career hat trick along with two draws.
- Senior Jaclyn Chirco (Hopkinton, Mass. / Hopkinton) was strong in net once again, making 11 saves while allowing ten goals over 61:25 to earn the win. Denise Hunt was saddled with the loss as she stopped six shots while giving up 11 goals.
