The Lead: Assumption trailed Dominican 4-3 with 11 minutes remaining in the first half before exploding for 13 goals over the next 15 minutes of action to blow open a close game on the way to a school-record 24 goals in the team's 24-15 victory on Monday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Dominican scored at 23:17 for a 1-0 lead, before consecutive goals by Amanda Burns (Billerica, Mass. / Billerica Memorial) and Tianna Habosian (Westford, Mass. / Westford Academy) gave Assumption a 2-1 lead just one minute later. Each team scored once over the next seven minutes for a 3-2 Hound advantage, however, the Chargers scored twice to pull in front 4-3 with 11:31 left in the half.
- Freshman Jenny Bush (Kennebunk, Maine / Kennebunk) tied up the game at four apiece with 10:38 left and Sarah Reilly (Fairfield, Conn. / Fairfield-Warde) netted a goal just 13 seconds later for a 5-4 lead. Bush extended the lead to 6-4 at 9:59 and the teams traded goals over the next six minutes. Callie Dwyer (Merrimack, N.H. / Merrimack) and Habosian pushed the lead to 10-7 with 3:48 left and Assumption outscored Dominican 2-1 over the last three minutes for a 12-8 advantage at the half.
- The Chargers led off the second half scoring just 1:12 into the period but the Hounds answered with four straight goals over a three-minute span getting two from Graves and one apiece from Burns and Reilly for a 16-9 lead. Dominican countered with three goals to trim the deficit to 16-12 with 21:56 left in the period.
- Quincy Wilkins (Wilbraham, Mass. / Minnechaug) ended the run and behind goals from Jen McDonald (Walpole, Mass. / Walpole) and Burns, Assumption led 19-12 at 16:30. The Chargers eventually closed within four, 19-14, with 11:37 left. Marisa Haverty (West Hartford, Conn. / Conard) extended it to a 20-14 lead 14 seconds later and the Hounds outscored Dominican 4-1 over the final 11 minutes to come away with a 24-15 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption outshot Dominican 38-35 in the contest and won 27 draws compared to just 13 for the Chargers. The Hounds were also 5-for-10 on free position attempts and had six caused turnovers.
- Reilly tied her career high with nine points – this time on five goals and four assists. Burns was all over the field with four goals, one assist, ten draw controls and two caused turnovers. Graves added four goals and one assist while Wilkins chipped in two goals two assists. Bush picked up nine draws while scoring twice.
- Jaclyn Chirco (Hopkinton, Mass. / Hopkinton) was solid in net, stopping 11 shots while allowing 11 goals in 37:42 to earn the win. Kyra Goucher (Derry, N.H. / Pinkerton Academy) made two saves and gave up four goals in 22:18 minutes of relief. Cara Moran took the loss for Dominican as she allowed 24 goals with 14 saves.
- The 24 goals by Assumption set a new program record, breaking the previous record of 23 set in a 23-10 win over Franklin Pierce in 2013. The 35 points (24g, 11a) in the contest was the second-highest single-game total in program history.
