The Lead: Assumption led 8-5 with seven minutes left in the first half, but Southern New Hampshire responded with six straight goals over the remainder of the half and didn't tail again on its way to an 18-14 victory on Wednesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Penmen jumped out to a 3-1 lead over the first ten minutes, before Quincy Wilkins (Wilbraham, Mass. / Minnechaug) scored off a feed from Sarah Reilly (Fairfield, Conn. / Fairfield-Warde) to cut the deficit to one. Callie Dwyer (Merrimack, N.H. / Merrimack) tied the game up at 18:44, though Southern N.H. quickly took back the lead with 17:21 left.
- Reilly needed just 15 seconds to pull the Hounds even and three consecutive goals by Caitlin Graves (Ashland, Mass. / Ashland), Reilly and Dwyer extended the Assumption lead to 7-4 with 12:02 left. The teams traded goals over the next six minutes, leaving the Hounds on top 8-5. However, it wouldn't last as Southern N.H. cut it to two, 8-6 at 4:11 and then scored five more goals in the period to take an 11-8 lead at the half.
- The Penmen opened the second half with a goal for the 12-8 advantage before goals by Reilly and Graves made it 12-10 with 22:12 left. A 4-2 SNHU run over the next ten minutes left Assumption trailing 16-12. Assumption did answer with three straight goals to trim the deficit to just 16-14 with 4:39 left but SNHU scored twice more for the 18-14 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption was outshout 43-36 in the contest and attempted nine more free position shots but was just 5 of 15. The Hounds also picked up more draw controls (19-14).
- Reilly was a force offensively with four goals and three assists while Dwyer added three goals and one assist. Graves recorded a hat trick while Amanda Burns (Billerica, Mass. / Billerica Memorial) finished with two goals and one assist.
- Jaclyn Chirco (Hopkinton, Mass. / Hopkinton) took the loss in net as she made 14 saves while giving up 18 goals. The total moves her into first among NCAA Division II active players with 552 career saves. That total is also the second-most in program history. Nicole Kennedy earned the win with 12 saves and 14 goals allowed.
