The Lead: In a back-and-forth contest throughout, the Greyhounds held the Purple Knights to four goals in the second half to secure a 13-9 win Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Sophomore Sarah Reilly (Fairfield, Conn. / Fairfield-Warde) gave Assumption a 1-0 lead just 58 seconds into the contest, and Saint Michael's was able to answer back with a goal of their own less than a minute later at 28:34 to tie the game. The Hounds added onto their lead at 25:12 with a goal from Callie Dwyer (Merrimack, N.H. / Merrimack) which led to two more goals in the next three minutes from Caitlin Graves (Ashland, Mass. / Ashland) and Amanda Burns (Billerica, Mass. / Billerica Memorial) extending the Greyhound lead to 4-1 at 22:27.
- The Purple Knights responded with two goals within a three-minute span, while still trailing 5-3. The Hounds answered with two goals from Reilly and Graves, extending their lead to 7-3 at the 14:56 mark. Saint Michael's and Assumption traded goals over the last ten minutes of the half, with the final two goals coming from Reilly and Burns for a 9-5 advantage at the break.
- Assumption opened the second half with a goal from Burns at 25:56 to extend the lead to 10-5, but Saint Michael's was able to respond with two goals of its own in the next two minutes. Jenny Bush (Kennebunk, Maine / Kennebunk) answered with a goal at 18:59 to stretch the Greyhound lead to 11-7.
- Saint Michael's cut the deficit down to three with a goal at 16:03, though Reilly answered with a goal at 13:54 to extend the lead back to four. Jen McDonald (Walpole, Mass. / Walpole) added onto the lead to make it 13-8, before the Purple Knights answered with a goal at 07:26. Assumption held Saint Michael's scoreless the rest of the way, resulting in the 13-9 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption outshot Saint Michael's 27-21 in the contest and led in draw controls, 15-9. The Purple Knights did have a 15-14 edge in ground balls, but turned the ball over 19 times.
- Reilly and Burns both tallied four goals on seven shots and Burns added three assists along with 6 draw controls and two caused turnovers. Graves chipped in pair of goals as well.
- Senior Tori Russo (South Windsor, Conn. / South Windsor) had three caused turnovers, three ground balls and two draws defensively while Jaclyn Chirco (Hopkinton, Mass. / Hopkinton) stopped eight shots in net to secure Assumption's fourth win of the season. Kaitlyn Wurzer took the loss while giving up 13 goals and making eight saves.
