The Lead: Top-ranked Adelphi scored the first ten goals of the contest on the way to an impressive 19-4 victory over the Hounds on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Adelphi scored twice in the opening two minutes and stretched their lead to 7-0 after ten minutes of action. The Panthers led 10-0 before Jen McDonald (Walpole, Mass. / Walpole) put the Hounds on the board with 12:09 left in the period. Adelphi added four more goals to lead 14-1 at the break.
- Freshman Amanda Burns (Billerica, Mass. / Billerica Memorial) scored just 13 seconds into the second half to make it 14-2, but the Panthers answered with four more goals over the next 15 minutes for an 18-2 advantage. Assumption did outscore Adelphi 2-1 in the last 11 minutes of play, with goals from Marisa Haverty (West Hartford, Conn. / Conard) and Tianna Habosian (Westford, Mass. / Westford Academy) off a Steph McGovern (Southborough, Mass. / Algonquin Regional) feed, for the 19-4 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption was outshot 31-8 in the contest and Adelphi had more draw controls (15-9). Each team picked up 12 ground balls thought the Hounds turned it over 24 times.
- Four different players scored, including Burns who a goal, one ground ball and one caused turnover. Sarah Reilly (Fairfield, Conn. / Fairfield-Warde) added three draw controls while Tori Russo (South Windsor, Conn. / South Windsor) had two ground balls and two draw controls.
- Four Adelphi players had at lead five points, led by Jacqueline Jahelka with three goals and four assists. Hailey Peterson earned the win as she made one save and allowed two goals in 50:28.
- Senior Jaclyn Chirco (Hopkinton, Mass. / Hopkinton) gave up 19 goals and made six saves in 60:00 minutes of action to take the loss.
