The Lead: Assumption led No. 19 Stonehill 6-5 at the half, but the Skyhawks scored three times in the opening six minutes of the second half as part of seven consecutive goals overall to come away with an 11-7 win over the Hounds on Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Assumption got on the board in the opening minutes as Amanda Burns (Billerica, Mass. / Billerica Memorial) found Sarah Reilly (Fairfield, Conn. / Fairfield-Warde) for the goal. The Hounds made it 2-0 with 26:26 left on a goal by Jenny Bush (Kennebunk, Maine / Kennebunk) from an assist by Burns. Stonehill got on the board at 20:44 with a goal but Burns answered back with a goal at 16:43.
- The Skyhawks cut the deficit to just 3-2 with a goal but Caitlin Graves (Ashland, Mass. / Ashland) at 13:13. Stonehill trimmed it to one with 12:31 left, but Burns won the ensuing draw and found Graves up field for a goal nine seconds later. The teams traded goals the remainder of the half, with one last Skyhawk tally in the last 15 seconds leaving them down 6-5 at the break.
- Stonehill scored three times in the opening six minutes of the half and then held the Hound scoreless while tallying three more goals for the eventual 11-6 lead with only 2:48 left. Reilly ended the drought for the Hounds with a goal off an assist from Quincy Wilkins (Wilbraham, Mass. / Minnechaug) for the 11-7 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption was outshot 30-23 in the contest and won 14 of 22 draws, but just four in the final 30 minutes. The Hounds picked up more ground balls (15-13) while both teams were 2 of 7 on free position attempts.
- Burns paced the offense with two goals, three assists, five draws and three ground balls while Reilly had two goals and one assist. Bush picked up eight draw controls to go with a goal.
- Bailey Grant earned the win in net, making eight saves with seven goals allowed while Jaclyn Chirco (Hopkinton, Mass. / Hopkinton) gave up 11 goals with seven saves.
