THE BASICS:

- The Lead: Assumption was unable to capture a set on Tuesday in its NE10 season-opener against New Haven, falling to the Chargers 3-0 on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Assumption fell behind 13-4 in the opening set but did counter with back-to-back points. New Haven responded with a run to stretch its lead to 23-9 before finishing with the 25-12 victory. In the second set, the visitors kept it close early and trailed just 15-10 and then 20-16, before the Chargers ended the set with the final five points.

- The Hounds played even with New Haven through the opening eight points of the third, but fell behind 15-8 after a Charger run. Assumption answered with a 9-5 run to pull within three, 20-17 on a Mary Campbell (Plainville, Mass. / Bishop Feehan) kill. The teams traded points and a kill from Julia Goyette (Randolph, Mass. / Ursuline Academy) made it just 23-20, however, consecutive kills for New Haven ended it, 25-20.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Assumption hit .151 in the match with 30 kills and 28 digs while the Chargers hit .35 with 42 kills and 36 digs.

- Olivia Burke (Salem, N.H. / Salem) hit a team-high .462 with seven kills and three total blocks while Kellie Smith (Richland, Mich. / Gull Lake) added seven kills but also had seven attack errors. Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake) dished off 18 assists with six digs and two kills while Campbell added four kills and three digs. Maria Chrisom (Dover, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas) led the team with nine digs.

- Caroline Martins led New Haven with 12 kills while Kristine Rios dished off 21 assists with eight kills. Lindsey Kim had a team-high 16 digs.
