- The Lead: Assumption trailed 14-11 with nine minutes left before scoring twice to close within one and the Hounds had a free position attempt in the final minute, but Bentley got the stop as the Falcons escaped with a 14-13 victory on Tuesday afternoon in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Assumption trailed 3-0 early but responded quickly. Sophomore Amanda Burns (Billerica, Mass. / Billerica Memorial) scored two goals in a matter of 14 seconds. Assumption tallied two more goals, from sophomore Callie Dwyer (Merrimack, N.H. / Merrimack) and junior Kailyn Hart (Cohoes, N.Y. / Shaker), giving Assumption a 4-3 lead with 11 minutes to go. The Hounds and Falcons went goal for goal with Assumption responding every time to go into the half even 7-7. Junior Sarah Reilly (Fairfield, Conn. / Fairfield-Warde), senior Alexis Pastore (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / Charles W. Baker), and Burns scored the final three goals of the period.
- The Falcons struck first by scoring two minutes into the second half. Once again, the Hounds responded right away with a goal by Reilly with 26:31 left in regulation. Bentley went on a 2-0 run to give them a 10-8 advantage with 24:05 minutes remaining. The pace of the game slowed down as Assumption crept its way back into the game with two goals in a span of seven minutes. First goal was by Reilly, while Burns fired a rocket into the top left corner of the net with 16:52 left in regulation for a 10-10 score.
- The Falcons answered with 4-1 run to give them a 14-11 lead with nine minutes left in regulation. Assumption would not go down without a fight, as Reilly scored on a breakaway and freshman Allison Foley (Walpole, Mass. / Walpole) tallied another to shrink the lead to just 14-13 with 5:46 remaining. The Hounds kept pressuring and earned a free position attempt with 33 seconds left, but Bentley goalie Eliza Bresler saved the shot to preserve the victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption outshot the Falcons 33-28, while causing more turnovers than the Falcons (15-9) the Hounds picked up more ground balls in the contest (21-16) and won more draw controls (15-14).
- Reilly led the offense with five goals, three caused turnovers and two ground balls while Burns was right behind her with four goals and six draw controls. Hart chipped in one goal, two assists and three ground balls while Pastore had one goal, three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Kyra Goucher (Derry, N.H. / Pinkerton Academy) took the loss as she made six saves and gave up 14 goals.
- Julia Glavin anchored her team with four goals and seven draws while MaryKate Staines added two goals and three assists. Bresler led the defense with 15 saves to earn the victory in net.
