- The Lead: No. 25 Assumption trailed 7-0 just five minutes into regulation and 14-8 at the half, but closed the score to four midway through the second half against second-ranked Adelphi before ultimately falling 22-17 on Saturday afternoon in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Adelphi started off the game strong, scoring seven goals within the first five minutes and dominating possession of the ball. Sarah Reilly (Fairfield, Conn. / Fairfield-Warde) got the Hounds on the board off a feed from Caitlin Graves (Ashland, Mass. / Ashland) at 23:48. The Panthers answered, though back to back goals from Jenny Bush (Kennebunk, Maine / Kennebunk) and Graves only 30 seconds apart left Assumption down 8-3.
- The Panthers tallied another goal with 20 minutes left, but the Hounds countered with three consecutive goals, by Meghan Cushing (Gorham, Maine / Gorham) and two from Amanda Burns (Billerica, Mass. / Billerica Memorial). The two teams traded scores over the final 11 minutes and Assumption got as close as 12-8, but two from Adelphi in the last two minutes made it 14-8 at the break.
- Within the first two minutes of the second half, Adelphi scored twice for a 16-8 advantage. Graves scored with 24:43 remaining and Reilly tallied another one minute later pull within 16-10. Trailing 18-11, the Hounds responded with three straight goals including two from Allison Foley (Walpole, Mass. / Walpole) to trim it to just 18-14 with 15 minutes left.
- Adelphi responded by scoring four of the next five goals and stretching its led to 22-15 with 6:27 remaining. The Hounds didn't quit, as Burns and Reilly tallied goals to cut it to 22-17 with 4:13 left. Assumption had chances in the final four minutes but the Panthers escaped with the five-goal win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption held a 32-27 advantage in shots, including an impressive 19-11 edge in the second half. The Hounds also picked up more ground balls (29-19) while winning one more draw control (21-20).
- Burns led the offense with four goals, two assists, nine draws and three caused turnovers while Reilly scored five times with nine draw controls. Alexis Pastore (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / Charles W. Baker) chipped in three caused turnovers and two ground balls while Callie Dwyer (Merrimack, N.H. / Merrimack) had four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
- Goalie Kyra Goucher (Derry, N.H. / Pinkerton Academy) took the loss in net as she allowed 19 goals while making four saves in 51 minutes of action. Emma Lemanski earned the victory by allowing nine goals and making six saves in 26:40.
- Kole Pollock led Adelphi with five goals and one assist while Lena Riportella had six goals and two assists. Allison Johnson dished off a team-high six assists.
