-The Lead: The Assumption University women's volleyball team fell to the Yellow Jackets of American International College in a Northeast-10 Conference battle on the road on Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds battled hard, falling by just four points in the first and third sets.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Yellow Jackets took the match in three sets with scores of, 25-21, 25-18 and 25-21.
-The hosts used a four-point run in the middle of the first match to pull ahead 14-8. Amber Williams and Andrea Serra each put up one kill in the rally. Assumption battled back with four straight points of their own, including kills by senior Alana Hruska (Marlborough, Conn. / RHAM) and Anna Dean to pull within two (14-12). The set saw three more ties before the hosts were able to pull ahead 20-17 on another four-point rally. AIC went on to claim the 25-21 final victory in set one.
-The Greyhounds kicked off the second set on a 3-0 run. They held the lead through the first seven points of the game before AIC took over, 9-8 on a kill by Serra. The hosts went on to put up seven unanswered points to pull ahead 20-13. The two teams each put up five more points as AIC claimed the 25-18 final in set two.
-The Yellow Jackets took an early 5-1 lead to kick off the final set. Ulrika Blomgren posted two kills in the rally. The Hounds pulled within three on back-to-back set errors by AIC, 12-9 and pulled within one an ace by first year Barbara Illig (Delaware, OH / Bishop Ready) (16-15). The Greyhounds held close to the Yellow Jackets, but the hosts never gave up their lead and pulled off the 25-21 final for the 3-0 match victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-First years Alexis Distasio (Windermere, Fla. / Dr. Phillips) and Carly Goodhue (Danvers, Mass. / Danvers) each put up seven kills to lead the Greyhounds. Junior Kyra Belden (Hollis, N.H. / Hollis-Brookline High School) added 22 assists on the day while Illig added a team-leading 24 digs.
-Serra led all players with 16 kills in the victory for AIC. Naomi Eckert handed out 40 assists and Amanda Rodriguez added 22 digs.
