-The Lead: The Assumption University women's volleyball team fell to the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire on the road on Tuesday evening. Assumption came out strong taking the first set 25-23, but the Penmen earned victories in the final three, 18-25, 19-25, and 17-25 to claim the final 3-1 match win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The first set was a back-and-forth battle that saw a total of seven ties. The Hounds used a pair of attack errors by the Penmen and a kill by first year Carly Goodhue (Danvers, Mass. / Danvers) to pull ahead 24-20. SNHU pulled within one before first year Barbara Illig (Delaware, OH / Bishop Ready) put away the winning kill for the 25-23 final.
- With Assumption ahead in the match, 1-0, and the second set even at 18-all, SNHU ripped off the final seven points - with three kills each from Chiara Di Valerio and Julia Pacini - to knot the match, 1-1.
- SNHU held an 18-17 edge in the third when a 7-2 run - powered by two kills each from Dai Thawnghmung and Di Valerio - gave them a 2-1 lead in the match.
- The Penmen lead in the fourth was 10-8 before a 10-3 flurry - sparked by a kill and an ace from Pacini and buoyed by four Thawnghmung kills - gave them a commanding 20-11 advantage.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-SNHU outhit Assumption in each of the final three sets, including .533-.258 in the fourth, as well as .282-.154 for the match.
-The Penmen doubled up Assumption in aces, 10-5, while the Greyhounds held a 9-7 edge in blocks.
-First year Alexis Distasio (Windermere, Fla. / Dr. Phillips) led the Greyhounds with 10 kills while junior Kyra Belden (Hollis, N.H. / Hollis-Brookline High School) led the team with 25 assists and Illig put up 18 digs.
