-The Lead: The Assumption University women's volleyball team outlasted the Panthers of Adelphi University in a Northeast-10 Conference match on Saturday afternoon. This was the first win over Adelphi in program history as the Hounds are off to a roaring start to the 2021 season, improving to 4-1 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Assumption took the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-22, to pull ahead early in the match, 2-0. Adelphi edged their way to a 25-22 victory to force a fourth set trailing in the match, 2-1. The Greyhounds battled to a 25-17 victory in the fourth and final set to capture the 3-1 final victory.
-The Panthers used an early six-point rally to pull ahead 6-2 in the first set, but the Greyhounds used four unanswered points, including two kills by senior Alana Hruska (Marlborough, Conn. / RHAM) to tie the set at 6-6. A five-point rally put the Hounds up 13-7 as senior Lara Herrero (San Juan, Puerto Rico / Academia Maria Reina) came in for three big kills. Adelphi responded with a six-point run of their own to tie the first set at 13-13. Assumption never lost the lead, pulling away with the 25-20 final win.
-Adelphi took an early 9-1 lead in the second set. They led by as many as 11 when Noelle Alberda added a kill for the 21-10 advantage. The Greyhounds went on a 15-2 run to finish out the set and claim the 25-22 victory.
-The third set was a back-and-forth battle that saw six ties. Down by four points, Adelphi went on an eight-point run to pick up the final 25-22 victory in set two and give the Panthers a shot as they trailed 2-1 in the match.
-Assumption took a five-point lead on a service ace by junior Kyra Belden (Hollis, N.H. / Hollis-Brookline High School) and the Greyhounds never looked back, claiming the 25-17 victory on another ace by Belden to capture the 3-1 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Herrero led Assumption with 14 kills and first year Alexis Distasio (Windermere, Fla. / Dr. Phillips) added 11 kills to lift Assumption to victory. Belden led all players with 39 assists and first year Barbara Illig (Delaware, OH / Bishop Ready) put up 20 digs for the Greyhounds. Alana Hruska (Marlborough, Conn. / RHAM) finished the match with three blocks and three block assists.
-Delaney Kiendra led Adelphi with 13 kills, Jaime Yonker put up a team- leading 16 digs and Kambel Fiser tallied 20 assists in the setback.
