-The Lead: The Assumption University women's volleyball team battled their way to a 3-2 Northeast-10 Conference victory over the Ravens of Franklin Pierce on Saturday in Laska Gymnasium. Prior to the start of the match, the Greyhounds recognized four seniors for Senior Day: Lara Herrero (San Juan, Puerto Rico / Academia Maria Reina), Alana Hruska (Marlborough, Conn. / RHAM), Alexandra Krawczyk (East Patchogue, N.Y. / Bellport) and Jill Orosz (Bridgewater, Mass. / Cardinal Spellman).

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Franklin Pierce took the first set, 25-20 and Assumption tied the match at 1-1 with a 27-25 victory in the second set. The Greyhounds pulled ahead 2-1 with a 28-26 final in the third set before the Ravens edged the Hounds, 25-23 in the fourth to force a fifth and final set. Assumption pulled away with a 15-9 victory in the fifth set and 3-2 match victory.

-The Greyhounds led 6-2 early in the first set before the Ravens went on a 6-1 run to pull ahead 8-7. Franklin Pierce took a 15-10 lead with a five-point rally. The Hounds pulled within three on a kill by first year Carly Goodhue (Danvers, Mass. / Danvers), but the visitors were able to use another 4-1 rally to take a six-point lead late in the set, 21-15. Assumption pulled within two before the Ravens finished with three unanswered points for the final 25-20 victory and 1-0 lead in the match.

-Assumption took a 7-2 lead to start the second set. Goodhue and her classmate, Anna Dean (Monroe, Mich. / St. Mary Catholic Central) each had two kills in the run. The Ravens pulled within two, before the Greyhounds went on a four-point rally to take a six-point lead, 16-10. Hruska and first year Alexis Distasio (Windermere, Fla. / Dr. Phillips) had kills in the run. The visitors used a late five-point rally to tie the match at 24-24. Assumption finished the set on a 3-1 run to claim the final 27-25 victory and tie the match at 1-1.

-The Greyhounds took an early 13-5 lead in the third set with three kills from Goodhue in a seven-point rally. Franklin Pierce tied the set at 18-18 with kills from Hannah Hillis and Mariah Robles. The set saw eight more ties before Assumption finished on a three-point run, and two final kills from Distasio gave them the third set, 28-26, and the 2-1 lead in the match.

-The fourth set was closely contested the whole way through, with the Ravens leading by no more than four points the whole time. Hills knocked the set-winner down to claim the final 25-23 victory, tying the match at 2-2.

-The final set was a back-and-forth battle, but the Greyhounds went on a 5-2 rally to claim the 15-9 final and 3-2 match victory. Distasio put up the final two kills for the Greyhounds.

INSIDE THE NUMEBRS

-Distasio led Assumption to victory with 24 kills in the match. She added 20 digs. Goodhue finished the day with 15 kills and Hruska followed with 12 kills. First year Barbara Illig (Delaware, OH / Bishop Ready) led the Greyhounds with 33 digs and junior Kyra Belden (Hollis, N.H. / Hollis-Brookline High School) dished out 59 assists in the victory.

-Tressa Brandt led Franklin Pierce with 19 kills. Morgan Schmutzler put up 25 digs and Kennedy Garnhart led the visitors with 32 assists.
