-The Lead: The Assumption University women's volleyball team fell to the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University in Northeast-10 Conference action on the road on Saturday. The Greyhounds tied the match at 1-1 with a victory in the second set, but ultimately fell 3-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Owls took a 25-15 victory in the first set and the Hounds tied the match up 1-1 with a 25-21 victory in the second set. SCSU went on to claim a 25-13 final in the third set and clinched the match with a 25-19 win in the fourth set.
-A 10-2 run in favor of the Owls gave them their largest lead of the first set, 19-10. Layla Cortez and Abigail Epstein each added two kills in the rally. The Greyhounds pulled within seven, but that is as close as they would come as a kill by Erika Benson sealed the 25-15 win in the first set for the hosts.
-After trailing by four at the start of the second set, Assumption used a 6-1 run to pull ahead 13-12. Senior Alana Hruska (Marlborough, Conn. / RHAM) and first year Carly Goodhue (Danvers, Mass. / Danvers) each put up kills in the rally for the Greyhounds. SCSU pulled back ahead by two before Assumption used an 8-1 rally to extend their lead back to four late in the second set, 22-18. Goodhue knocked down three kills in the run for the Greyhounds. Each team put up three more points in the set with Assumption coming out on top, 25-21, and tying the match up 1-1.
-The Greyhounds earned the first point of the third set, but SCSU took the lead back with four straight points and never looked back taking a 12-point final victory over Assumption, 25-13, and taking a 2-1 lead in the match.
-The Greyhounds led 7-3 at the start of the fourth set, but SCSU turned it on with a 10-1 rally to pull ahead 13-8. Gabriela Vazquez and Benson put up two kills each in the run. Assumption pulled within two on a kill by first year Alexis Distasio (Windermere, Fla. / Dr. Phillips) (15-13), but the Owls outscored the visitors, 10-5 to claim the final 25-19 set and 3-1 match victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Goodhue led Assumption with 12 kills. First year Barbara Illig (Delaware, OH / Bishop Ready) led the Greyhounds with 28 digs and sophomore Sophia Noel (Hampden, Mass. / Minnechaug Regional) added 26 assists in the setback.
-Benson led all players with 16 kills for the Owls while Epstein tacked on 15 kills in the victory. Krishnalel So'oto added 21 digs and Taylor Jones dished out 57 assists to lift SCSU to victory.
