-The Lead: The Assumption University women's volleyball team dropped three sets to the Chargers of the University of New Haven on Tuesday night. The Greyhounds made all three sets close, with the Chargers taking scores of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-22.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Greyhounds led 5-3 at the start of the first set on a kill by first year Alexis Distasio (Windermere, Fla. / Dr. Phillips), but New Haven went on a four-point rally to take over the two-point lead. Emily Barry posted two kills for the Chargers to pull ahead 11-8, but two attack errors helped the Greyhounds tie the game at 11-11. New Haven took a three-point lead on a kill by Jessica Akiona, 23-20. Assumption put up one more point in the set, but another kill by Akiona and an attack error by the Greyhounds sealed the deal as the visitors pulled ahead 1-0 in the match with a 25-21 victory in the first set.
-The Chargers took a 14-6 lead early in the second set. Assumption pulled within three on back-to-back kills by first year Ruthie Ridderhoff (Chandler, AZ / W.T. Woodson) and junior Kyra Belden (Hollis, N.H. / Hollis-Brookline High School), 20-17. New Haven edged the Hounds 5-3 to claim the final 25-20 victory in the second set, pulling ahead 2-0 in the match.
-The third set was the closest, with the Chargers taking just a three-point victory. The set saw 10 total ties with Assumption taking a 17-14 lead on a kill by senior Lara Herrero (Hollis, N.H. / Hollis-Brookline High School). New Haven used a seven-point rally to pull ahead 21-17 late in the match. Macy Brown had two kills in the run for the Chargers. Another kill by Brown and an error on the Greyhounds lifted the visitors to the final 25-22 victory and 3-0 match win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Distasio led Assumption with 12 kills to go along with 13 digs in the setback. Belden led the Greyhounds with 33 assists and tacked on eight digs. First year Barbara Illig (Delaware, OH / Bishop Ready) led Assumption with six digs.
-Brown led New Haven with 20 kills and 15 digs in the victory. Akiona added 11 kills and Sophia Leon-Tabor put up a game-leading 41 assists for the Chargers.
