-The Lead: The Assumption University women's lacrosse team captured a season-opening victory over the Skyhawks of Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds led by 10 at halftime before Stonehill saw their bid at a comeback in the second half. Assumption held on for the final 15-11 victory at Brian Kelly '83 stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-After a scoreless opening 10 minutes, the Skyhawks hopped out on top first with a goal by senior Olivia Pino. The Hounds responded just a minute later with a tally by first year Olivia Catanzarite (East Longmeadow, Mass. / East Longmeadow). The two teams traded the next two goals to tie the game at 2 before Catanzarite put in her second goal of the day to give Assumption their first lead, 3-2 with 18:59 on the clock. The Hounds went on a 12-0 scoring run to end the first half with a dominating 13-2 lead.
-Catanzarite finished the first 30 minutes with an impressive six goals. Senior Olivia Angelo (Miller Place, N.Y. / Miller Place) added four goals in the first stanza.
-The Skyhawks started the second half just like the first. They put their third tally on the board at the 24:57 mark with a goal by first year, Molly Mae Hughes. Junior Kendall Fressle added four goals for the visitors in the final 30 minutes.
-Stonehill outscored the Greyhounds 9-2 in the second half as they cut the lead down to just four at the end of the game. Assumption held on for the final 15-11 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Junior Allie Collins (Natick, Mass. / Natick) made an six saves in net for Assumption and improves to 1-0 on the season.
-Kaleigh Wright made eight saves for Stonehill and falls to 0-2.
-Catanzarite led the Hounds offensively with six goals and an assist in her first collegiate game. Angelo added four goals and two assists in the victory.
-Fressle led the Skyhawks on offense with five goals in the setback.
-Stonehill edged Assumption in total shots, 30-29.
-Stonehill won 15 draw controls and Assumption won 13.
-The hosts picked up 18 groundballs and went 16-for-18 in clear attempts.
