-The Lead: The number four seeded Assumption University women's lacrosse team defeated the number five seeded SNHU Penmen by a 14-goal margin in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship on Friday evening. The Hounds used 10 different goal scorers in the victory and advance to the NE10 semifinal game at Bentley University on Monday, May 3rd at 7:00 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Greyhounds put up their first goal at the 23:55 mark when sophomore Jenna Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass. / Longmeadow) carried the ball down the right side and found senior Allison Foley (Walpole, Mass. / Walpole) in the middle who found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. Sophomore Allison Marshall (Strafford, N.H. / Oyster River) put in Assumption's second goal with a rebound shot at the 21:22 mark.
-The Penmen got on the board when graduate student Dani Tompkins rolled around the right post and bounced a shot in with 20:46 on the clock.
-The Hounds went on a six-goal run over 13 minutes to pull ahead 8-1. Foley pushed her way through defenders at the 19:04 mark and found the back of the net as she was falling back for the 3-1 lead. Joseph found room in the top right corner on a free-position shot to put the Hounds up by three, with 18:10 on the clock. Five minutes later first year Olivia Catanzarite (East Longmeadow, Mass. / East Longmeadow) set up at the top of the circle and found senior Olivia Angelo (Miller Place, N.Y. / Miller Place) in the middle for the score and the 5-1 advantage. With 8:55 on the clock sophomore Isabelle Jackson (Medway, Mass. / Medway) flew to the right side of the circle and fired a shot to top left shelf for the five-goal advantage with 8:55 to go in the first, 6-1. Just one minute later Catanzarite netted the same kind of goal from the left side for the 7-1 lead. Joseph carried the ball down the right wing and found Foley cutting from the top of the circle for the score at the 6:30 mark, 8-1.
-SNHU broke up the run with a goal from sophomore Avery Galle at the 2:49 mark (8-2).
-Assumption netted two more goals before the half, Jackson took a quick turn around shot and Catanzarite rolled off the right post and found the top left corner for the 10-2 lead at the half.
-The Hounds started the second half with a four-goal run. Sophomore Claire Desliva (Massapequa Park, N.Y. / Massapequa) found Foley cutting through the middle with just three minutes knocked off the clock. First year Isabelle Edwards (Gloucestershire, England / Westonbirt School) found room through the right side just a minute later to push Assumption ahead 12-2. Desilva set the Hounds up for their next goal from behind the net when she dished it to Joseph for the 13-2 advantage. Desilva netted the hosts 14th goal on a free-position shot to take the 12-goal lead at the 21:51 mark.
-First year Shelby Cole scored for the Penmen on a shot to the low right corner with 18:36 to play, as the visitors trailed by 11 (14-3).
-Assumption used three more goals by junior Lauren Jakobs (Naples, Maine / Lake Region), Marshall and first year Ella Tenney (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) for the final 17-3 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Foley led the Hounds on offense with four goals in the victory. Joseph added two goals and two assists.
-Junior Allie Collins (Natick, Mass. / Natick) made eight stops in the victory for Assumption and improves to 7-3 on the season.
-Junior Caela McCartney made 13 saves in net for SNHU and falls to 2-9.
-Assumption outshot SNHU 32-16 (30-12 shots on goal).
-The Hounds picked up 28 ground balls to the Penmen's 18.
-SNHU won 17 draw controls and Assumption won five.
-The Hounds finished 3-for-3 on free-possession shots.
