-The Lead: The Assumption University women's lacrosse team defeated the Southern N.H. University Penmen in NE10 action on Wednesday afternoon. The Penmen outscored Assumption 6-5 over the first 30 minutes, but the Hounds rallied for 10 goals and allowed just two in the second half to secure the 15-8 final victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-SNHU opened up scoring in the first two minutes of play with a goal by Shelby Cole. Assumption responded quickly when junior Lauren Jakobs (Naples, Maine / Lake Region) found first year Isabelle Edwards (Gloucestershire, England / Westonbirt School) open for the score (1-1). The Hounds put up three more goals over the next eight minutes to pull ahead 4-1. The Penmen went on a five-goal run of their own to pull ahead 6-4 with 1:57 to go in the first half. Sophomore Skylar Renaud scored two of the five goals for SNHU. Jakobs found room at the back of the net before the buzzer to bring Assumption within one heading into the halftime break (6-5).
-The Hounds opened up the second half on a six-goal run to take an 11-6 lead with 12:24 on the clock. Jakobs tallied her third goal of the game at the start of the second half to tie the game at 6-6. First year, Olivia Catanzarite (East Longmeadow, Mass. / East Longmeadow) put in back-to-back goals to put Assumption up by two. Jakobs added two more goals in the run and sophomore Jenna Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass. / Longmeadow) added a tally to give the Hounds the five-point advantage (11-6).
-SNHU put in their final two goals of the game at the 11:10 mark and 6:47 mark respectively. Assumption finished the game on a four-goal run, including two more from Edwards, for the final 15-8 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Jakobs led the Hounds on offense with five goals and two assists in the victory. Catanzarite added three goals and one assist and Edwards added another three goals in the win.
-Renaud led SNHU with three goals in the setback.
-Junior Allie Collins (Natick, Mass. / Natick) improves to 4-1 in net for Assumption as she made 13 saves in the victory.
-Caela McCartney falls to 1-3 on the season. She made 11 saves in goal for the Penmen.
-Assumption outshot SNHU 32-22.
-The Hounds won 18 draw controls while the Penmen won eight.
-Assumption was successful in 18-of-20 clear attempts.
-Both teams picked up 10 ground balls.
