-The Lead: The Assumption University Volleyball team opened the 2021 season in a tri-match with Bridgeport and Holy Family on Saturday afternoon. The Hounds fell to the Purple Knights in the first match of the day, 3-1, but claimed a 3-1 victory over Holy Family to cap off the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Match 1: Bridgeport 3, Assumption 1

-Bridgeport took the first set, 25-14 before Assumption tied it up with a 25-16 victory in the second set. The Purple Knights edged the Hounds in the final two sets, 27-25 and 25-19.

-First year Alexis Distasio (Windermere, Fla. / Dr. Phillips) led Assumption with 10 kills to go along with six digs. Barbara Illig (Delaware, OH / Bishop Ready) posted 20 digs for the Hounds and Kyra Belden (Hollis, N.H. / Hollis-Brookline High School) dished out 32 assists.

-First year Melanie Smith led Bridgeport with 19 kills and her classmate Paola Hernandez was right behind her with 17. Paola also added 10 digs in the victory. First year Jaden Drollinger posted 41 assists and senior Emily Burford finished with a team-leading 12 digs.

Match 2: Assumption 3, Holy Family 1

-Assumption cruised to a 25-14 victory in the first set before Holy Family came alive for a 25-14 win in the second round. Assumption pushed by the Tigers in the final two sets by scores of 27-25 and 25-22.

-Distasio led the Hounds again with 23 kills in the victory. Belden dished out another 49 assists. Illig and Alexandra Krawczyk (East Patchogue, N.Y. / Bellport) each posted 11 digs en route to the 3-1 win.

-Fifth-year Carly Covington led Holy Family with 17 kills in the setback. Junior Mainerys Munoz posted a team-leading 13 digs and senior Morgan Silks added 46 assists.
