Rowing Takes First at Wormtown Chase

SHREWSBURY, Mass.- This past weekend, Assumption University women's rowing returned to Lake Quinsigamond to compete in the Wormtown Chase.

The Greyhounds fielded a novice four in a four-boat field that included Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Massachusetts Maritime, and Franklin Pierce University. The Hounds were the third boat to start in the 3.5-mile head race and quickly passed the Maritime four within the first half mile of the race. The four then proceeded to catch and pass WPI with a mile to go on the course. Assumption crossed the line first with a time of 26:50.8, more than 44 seconds ahead of second place WPI (27:34.2). Mass Maritime finished third (28:51.6), and FPU crossed the line in fourth with a time of 29:20.3.

The boat was coxed by Isabella Baker. Isabella Anzalone, Bella Perryman, Katherine Ickes, and Carly Duvall were rows from stroke to bow.

"I'm beyond impressed with our progress. Everyone on the team brings great energy, effort, and attitude to every practice, and it showed today," said David Deiuliis, Women's Rowing Coach. "We are further ahead than I expected at this point of the year; these women are really putting us back on track for future success."

The first-place finish was Assumption's first gold medal at the Chase and capped off a successful return to rowing this fall after a very long two-year hiatus from competition for the Greyhounds.
