Field Hockey Caps Regular Season wIth 2-1 Win at STAC

SPARKILL, N.Y. – In the regular season finale, on a rain-drenched Spartan Field, the Assumption University field hockey team claimed at least a share of the 2022 Northeast-10 Conference regular season championship for the second consecutive season with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over St. Thomas Aquinas.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Assumption dominated the possession in the early portion of the first quarter. Still, the Spartans were the first to score when the third of three successive penalty corner opportunities found the back of the net. Hailey Galison played the ball into Jasmijn Van Drunen at the top of the circle, who hurled a pass to Nicola Van Vuuren on the right wing, which the Dutch native struck hard into the cage. St. Thomas had a 6-0 edge in penalty corners in the first quarter.
The Greyhounds came out aggressively in the second period. They equalized the matter after six minutes when senior Christina Leonard scored her team-high 12th goal of the season from a Chloe Kaeller dish inside the circle. It was the freshman's sixth assist of the year.
The game-winning score would come from a penalty stroke for Assumption three and half minutes into the second half. Graduate student Lucy Malia unloaded on the ball, expertly placing it in the top right corner.
The Spartans would take six shots in the final quarter of action, trying hard to tie it up, but none of those would get past goalkeeper Kylie Gargiulo.
