No. 6 Field Hockey Falls to No. 9 Saint Anselm in Shootout

MANCHESTER, N.H. – In a heart-pounding late-season battle of top-10 nationally-ranked opponents, the Assumption University field hockey team fell to Saint Anselm College 2-1 in a Northeast-10 Conference penalty shootout.

THE BASICS
Score: No. 9 Saint Anselm College 2, No. 6 Assumption University 1
Records: Greyhounds (13-4, 10-2 NE10) | Hawks (11-5, 10-2 NE10)

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half was a defensive affair, as the two sides combined for only three shots-on-goal, two for the Hawks and one for the Greyhounds.
The majority of the third quarter followed the same script until, with one minute remaining, Callie Beauparlant caused a turnover near the center line, which the sophomore dribbled upfield to find sophomore Mia Salah who quickly one-touched a pass to senior Christina Leonard, who with one touch of her own flicked a shot off the goalkeeper and into the back of the cage for a score.
The Greyhounds would hold onto the lead until six minutes remained in the fourth quarter. Off of a penalty corner, sophomore Amanda Lewandowsky passed the ball to junior Maddie Davis, who punched it in for the eighth time this season, tying the encounter at one apiece and sending the game into overtime.
After 80 minutes of scoreless action, the game proceeded to a penalty shootout.
Saint Anselm would win the game, as they converted on three of the five penalty shots, where the Greyhounds only scored twice
