Stonehill Topples Men's Basketball

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Assumption University men's basketball team was dealt a 65-58 setback on Saturday afternoon at Laska Gymnasium.

The first half would feature three ties and three lead changes between the teams. But after senior Jordan White (Prince Frederick, Md.) found junior Kani Glover (Brockton, Mass.) for a layup which gave the Greyhounds a 10-8 edge, the Skyhawks came back with six unanswered to seize the lead. White helped bring an eight-point deficit down to two by capitalizing on a Skyhawk turnover to make it 26-24 with under 30 seconds remaining, but Owen Chose closed out the half by sinking a jumper to give Skyhawks the momentum moving forward.

Even though senior Omar El Sheikh (Giza, Egypt) brought the margin to a single possession by opening the scoring in the second half, Stonehill (13-10, NE-10 10-8) quickly established control by scoring nine straight by first getting a dunk from Isiah Burnett for an initial spark. The Skyhawks ballooned their lead to 15 when Chose sank free throws to create a 45-30 score shortly before the midway point, but the Greyhounds did not give up.

Trailing by 10 with 3:47 to go, the Greyhounds stormed back and slashed the margin down to four at 60-56 with junior Ian Gaiter (Meriden, Conn.) and Glover providing the scoring. But after Glover made a charity shot, Chose drew a foul and made an ensuing clutch free throw to keep it a two-possession game. Assumption attempted a pair of 3-pointers to get back into it, but both of them rimmed out. Chose and Emmanuel Bonso sank free throws at the other end to put the game out of reach.

Chase led four Stonehill players in twin figures by scoring 18 points. Andrew Sims added 15 points, while Myles Hanson and Burnett contributed 10 points and two blocks apiece. Josh Mack had a strong effort off the bench by finishing with six points and eight rebounds.

Gaiter racked up 25 points to go along with six rebounds and three blocked shots to pace Assumption in the loss. Sophomore Njavan Stewart (Newton Upper Falls, Mass.) had 18 points, and graduate student Matt Kelly (North Potomac, Md.) registered five assists and two steals.

Assumption (10-11, NE-10 6-11) will conclude its three-game homestand when it next hosts Bentley on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Two seniors will also be recognized for their contributions to the program prior to the contest.
