Box Score DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The No. 20 Assumption University women's lacrosse team fell to Embry-Riddle in its season opener by a 14-10 score on Saturday afternoon at the ERAU Lacrosse Stadium.
The Greyhounds burst out to a 3-0 lead by most notably getting a pair of quick goals off the sticks of senior Lauren Jakobs (Naples, Maine) and graduate student Alison Foley (Walpole, Mass.) in the opening minute of play. Senior Jill Good (North Andover, Mass.), who set up Foley's marker, then tallied the team's third unanswered goal to start the game with 10:44 left in the first quarter. Embry-Riddle, however, responded with a 4-0 run and took its first lead when Zariah Durham netted a free position goal at the 3:56 mark.
With the score tied at the end of the first quarter, Assumption regained the lead when junior Jenna Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored her first marker of the season by capitalizing on a yellow card which was issued to Durham. But once again, the Eagles had an answer and rattled off five straight goals to seize control. Aliza Garofalo started the run with a free position shot at 11:20, and the Eagles carried a 9-6 advantage into halftime.
The host's second-quarter run proved to be a difference maker, as the two teams netted two goals apiece in the third, and the Eagles edged the Greyhounds by a 3-2 margin in the fourth to earn the win and remain undefeated. Murphy McDonough sealed the final outcome by scoring her second goal of the game with six minutes left.
Sallie Squire led the way with five goals on six shots for Embry-Riddle (3-0), which won despite being outshot by a 30-26 margin overall. Garofolo and Durham each netted a ha trick, while Durham added two assists and caused two turnovers. Elizabeth Ninesling won six draw controls, and Kendall Leonard anchored the defense with four caused turnovers and two ground balls. Aubrey Fixen made 14 saves to pick up the win between the posts.
Sophomore Ella Tenney (Braintree, Mass.) paced the Assumption offense with a hat trick, while Foley and Good also factored into three goals by scoring twice and tallying a helper. Sophomore Olivia Catanzarite (East Longmeadow, Mass.) won five draws, senior Cassie Palmisano (Woburn, Mass.) caused three turnovers, and senior Allie Collins (Natick, Mass.) made seven saves and picked up seven ground balls in the setback.
Assumption (0-1) will continue its three-game stretch in Florida to begin its 2022 spring season when it visits No. 23 Saint Leo on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.
