No. 12 Mercy Uses Big Third Quarter To Down No. 21 Women's Lacrosse In Battle Between Nationally-Ranked Programs

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. – The No. 21 Assumption University women's lacrosse team dropped its home opener to No. 12 Mercy by a 12-6 score on a cold and windy Sunday afternoon at Brian Kelly Stadium.

Assumption (2-2) got off to a quick start by scoring the first two goals of the game in the opening four minutes. Senior Jill Good (North Andover, Mass.) netted an unassisted tally to spark the offense at 13:34 before Lauren Jakobs (Naples, Maine) found Ella Tierney (Braintree, Mass.) for her first of two markers less than a minute later.

The Mavericks, however, responded with four straight by having four different players find the back of the net. After Jakobs scored to bring the Greyhounds within one, Briana Corace converted a free position attempt to give the visitors a 5-3 advantage through one quarter of play.

The teams also played a tightly contested second quarter. Following a marker by Leah Hansen, Assumption closed out the half with two unanswered goals. Graduate student Alison Foley (Walpole, Mass.) most notably found Good with 40 seconds left with the final seconds of a Greyhound yellow card ticking down, and the Mavericks held a 6-5 edge at recess.

Following the 10-minute halftime break, Mercy (3-2) owned the third quarter and outscored the hosts by a 5-1 margin in the 15-minute span to pull away. Juliana Keenan scored the first two of three straight for the guests before Kelly Rosenfeld capped the scoring in the frame by finding the back of the net with just 0.5 seconds left on the clock. The Mavericks, which led by five through three quarters of play, then kept the Greyhounds off the board in the fourth to come away with the victory.

Keenan scored four goals and Micayla Brady won seven draw controls to lead the way for Mercy, which won despite being outshot by a 25-24 margin and losing the ground game 24-17. Lindsey Shimborske headlined the defensive effort by picking up six ground balls and causing three turnovers, and goalie Madeline Garvalosa made 10 saves.

Good and Tenney paced the Assumption offense with two goals apiece, while Good also had three ground balls. Graduate student Haley Rose (Wading River, N.Y.) accumulated four ground balls and three caused turnovers to lead the Greyhound defensive effort, and senior goalie Allie Collins (Natick, Mass.) turned away eight shots.

Assumption will next open up Northeast-10 Conference action when it travels to Saint Michael's on Saturday, March 19. Opening draw is scheduled for 3 p.m.
